Scope of Job:
The Department of Biology at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) occasionally has the need to hire One-Year Lecturers to teach in its Bachelor of Science programs. Applications are now being accepted for multiple positions starting fall 2019 with approved spring 2020 approval. Responsibilities include delivering quality instruction in the program, advising students, and participating in scholarly activities serving the college, university or local community as needed. Lecturers will be responsible for delivering quality instruction within the undergraduate programs in Biology and serving the college and university. This posting is subject to change based on enrollment.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund - a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
This posting is for fall 2019/spring 2020 semesters only, subject to change based on enrollment needs and budgetary approval.

Minimum Qualifications:
M.S. in Biology or closely related area from an accredited university.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
M.S. in Biology or closely related area from an accredited university.

Preferred Qualification:
Ph.D. and previous experience teaching at the University level is desirable, as well as ability to use technology to support teaching and learning.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Incomplete applications

This position is based on enrollment need and budgetary approval on a semester basis.
