The George Mason University, Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Science (COS), located in the vibrant Washington, D.C., area, invites well-qualified candidates to apply for a twelve-month Postdoctoral Research Fellow position starting the Spring 2019 semester. The College of Science is the largest research unit within the university constituting of approximately 30 percent of the total research portfolio. Responsibilities:
This position entails working on an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)-funded project entitled, “Structure Exploiting Trust Regions for Bilevel and Risk-Averse Optimization,” directed by Dr. Harbir Antil. The project is broad in scope and is aimed at algorithms for optimization problems governed by large-scale physical models given by partial differential equations (PDEs), optimization under uncertainty, fractional PDEs, inverse problems, dimensionality reduction, deep learning. The incumbent will also be assigned to teach one course a year. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of yearly extensions depending on performance and funding.

Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related area, with expertise in optimization, numerical analysis, and PDE modeling and computations.
