Nature & Purpose of PositionThe Transfer Academic Advisor works with students at community colleges and The Woodlands Center to provide information and facilitate students’ successful transfer to Sam Houston State University. The Transfer Academic Advisor helps pre-transfer students identify and develop educational goals, explore degree options, analyze degree requirements, understand how transfer credits apply, determine best course options, and map transfer and graduation timelines. The Transfer Academic Advisor assists students with basic questions regarding admissions, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
Primary ResponsibilitiesAdvises prospective and accepted students regarding their SHSU degree programs and curriculum. Assists prospective students by meeting with them and discussing course choices at their home institution and SHSU. Provides pre-matriculation advising. Travels to feeder school campuses or satellite campuses to advise students. Maintains updated student files throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary. Assists students with resolving academic issues. Plans and/or attends community college or University events (i.e., Open House, Transfer Fridays, etc.) related to fostering an integrated partnership in the best interest of students. Assists with the review and maintenance of up-to-date articulation guides. Develops expertise in fields of study and monitors changes in curriculum that affects transfer students. Assists with or coordinates orientation sessions for groups of incoming new students. Assists with or conducts recruiting of high school or community college students and gives presentations to small or large groups. Analyzes and processes degree plans and degree exceptions. Assists all student populations, regardless of field of study. May provide retention advice to students on probation. May help with training new advisors. Performs other related duties as assigned.
