Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of organizational unit is to provide police and security, environmental health and safety, parking transportation, and emergency management services for North Carolina Central University.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the position is to serve as an assistant patrol squad supervisor in the Operations Division of the Department. This position is required to know the campus environment which includes the following: street layouts, building names and locations, detect crimes before they occur, conduct periodic self-initiated tasks to protect people and property by understanding crime trends and activities. Identify and investigate suspicious individuals, incidents, and vehicles, respond to calls dispatched by Communications or the Watch Commander, recognize situations quickly and determine appropriate actions. Review the facts of a situation to determine whether a criminal act or a policy violation has occurred. Properly detain or arrest persons as required and transport same in accordance with policy; document detentions and arrests prior to going off duty using the appropriate forms. Use proper subject control when needed, and document same using appropriate forms. Conduct searches within legal and safety parameters when required and secure. Identify and interview victims, witnesses, and suspects during the preliminary investigation

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of criminal and traffic laws, knowledge of investigation techniques and case preparation requirements for routine traffic and criminal cases, must have knowledge of equipment provided by the Department and its care, knowledge of the process for obtaining and serving search warrants preservation, ability to conduct crime prevention programs, ability to use conflict resolution and mediation skills as needed during the patrol shift. Ability to communicate effectively to witnesses, victims, and detainees/arrestees, other officers, the community, management, and others through interpersonal interactions and in writing, ability to plan and conduct community programs; ability to identify problems, identify potential options for resolution and the ability to use discretion during criminal investigations, arrests, warrant service, and interaction with members of the community.This position is to serve as an assistant to the patrol squad supervisor.

Minimum Education/Experience

High school diploma or equivalency.
Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Individual must be BLET certified as a law enforcement officer by the State of North Carolina through the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Individual will be required to become DCIcertified, trained in mobile data terminal use, and trained in Records Management Systems (RMS), Police 2 Police (P2P), and any other software determined to be required by management.
