About the College of Natural Sciences and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The College of Natural Sciences (CNS) has fourteen schools and departments https://www.cns.umass.edu/about/departments including the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) https://www.umass.edu/biochem/. BMB is participating in a grant awarded to CNS by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to foster inclusion in our undergraduate student body https://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/umass-amherst-receives-1-million-enhance. A major component of this project is the implementation of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) first-year laboratory experiences for life science majors. This transformation of the first year experience for life science majors, including BMB majors, will inform ongoing curriculum development in the BMB major. Position is intended to be filled by September 1, 2019; however, a different start date, no later than January 2020, is negotiable.

Job Description

Examples of duties:

  • Classroom instruction in the BMB sections of an introductory molecular and cellular biology course that is the first required course in the BMB major taught by the BMB department. This position will coordinate course learning objectives, content, format and assessment with the course director and instructors in other CNS departments that offer similar courses.
  • Classroom instruction in the BMB sections of an upper level, non-majors biochemistry course that serves as essential preparation for MCAT exams. This position will coordinate with the course director on course learning objectives, content, format and assessment.
  • Implementing evidence-based pedagogical approaches.
  • Contributing to the BMB and life sciences curriculum by participating in ongoing discussions of pedagogical best practices, the current education research, the BMB Educational Effectiveness Plan (https://www.umass.edu/oapa/program-assessment/academic-department-assessment/educational-effectiveness-plan-eep) and curricular changes informed by the HHMI Inclusive Excellence project.
  • Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Additionally, the Department is exploring the feasibility of non-standard section times and formats.

  • A Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a closely-related field is required.
  • Experience in teaching biochemistry and molecular biology in an active learning environment
  • Knowledge of course design, assessment methods and teaching strategies
