Position Description:
The incumbent serves as the chief administrative and financial officer for two academic units (English Department and Writing Programs) which also serves as the administrative home for several programs. These programs include the University's ESL program, the Undergraduate Writing Center, which provides tutoring support for all College undergraduates at four separate locations, and various Summer Institutes. Academic units comprised of 80 ladder and emeriti faculty, 70 lecturers, 19 career staff (one serves in an Academic title), 1 full-time contract staff, 20 student receptionists, 40 peer learning facilitators, 180 TAships each year, 105 graduate students in 30 sub-fields of study, and approximately 1000 undergraduate majors (in English alone) and thousands more undergrads served each year in Writing Programs. The combined operating, endowment, and research budget is in excess of $30 million annually. Functions independently and in conjunction with the Chair of the English Department, and the Director for Writing Programs to support the teaching, research and public service mission of one of the largest academic departments (English) and service unit (Writing Programs) in the College of Letters & Science. The Manager has a significant impact on every area of departmental activity, and requires a broad and comprehensive understanding of the research, academic objectives and workings of the department. Primary responsibilities include strategic and long range planning; policy and direction setting; problem solving; decision making; budgeting, staffing and resource management; academic personnel generally and academic personnel with respects to the librarian series of employees; as well as general administrative management of the department. Serves as administrative liaison to the Dean's Office in clarifying departmental goals and objectives.
