Endowed Faculty Chair Positions Available in the Broad Fields of Interaction of Light with Matter (ILM)

For nearly 200 years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY has been defining the scientific and technological advances of our world. Rensselaer serves nearly 7500 undergraduate and graduate students from 49 states and over 60 countries. Guided by the Rensselaer Plan 2024, Rensselaer seeks to transform the delivery of pedagogical innovation, and to be a transformative agent in the 21st Century and beyond.

Rensselaer seeks to fill two (2) chaired faculty positions in the broad fields of the Interaction of Light with Matter (ILM). When filled, the incumbents will comprise the Future Chips Constellation within the Center for Materials Devices and Integrated Systems (cMDIS). This Constellation is designed to assemble a group of outstanding faculty who will provide a critical mass of leadership in the fundamental understanding, control and application of new modalities for the interaction of light with matter. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, new materials for manipulation of light; new optical transduction phenomena; novel photon-driven synthetic methods, new photonic systems, optical interactions with biological systems; metamaterials; and optical band structure engineering.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or foreign degree equivalent in an applicable science or engineering discipline, along with evidence of effective teaching, exceptional scholarly achievement, and a history that demonstrates the ability to create and maintain an internationally recognized research program. Each of the successful candidates will exhibit a compelling vision for defining the future of their fields, as well as how they will be at the forefront of those advances. The incumbents will develop and maintain vibrant externally funded research programs and contribute to the academic enterprise of their home department.
Appointments will be as tenured faculty, and will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. Academic appointments will be made in one or more academic departments within Rensselaer’s School of Engineering or School of Science. Salary, benefits and start-up packages are competitive, and will be commensurate with experience.

Rensselaer offers world-class research facilities and an atmosphere promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. The cMDIS is an interdisciplinary center spanning the fields of engineering, physical, and chemical sciences, with about 90 faculty members. It also operates a 10,000 square foot class 100 cleanroom, and a developing multimillion-dollar nanoscale materials characterization core. Additional major research facilities at Rensselaer include the 200,000+ square foot Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies along with one of the fastest university-based supercomputers in the world in the Center for Computational Innovation. Other major research centers exist at Rensselaer, offering outstanding opportunities for collaboration in this field. These include the Center for Light Enabled Systems (an NSF Engineering Research Center), the Lighting Research Center, the Center for Architectural Science and Ecology, and the Center for Future Energy Systems.

We welcome candidates who will bring diverse cultural, ethnic, national and international perspectives to Rensselaer’s work and campus communities.
