(Job #19-20) Administrator III, Dean of Students. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month pay plan, exempt position in the Dean of Students Office. Position Summary: The Dean of Students provides leadership, planning, and supervision in the areas of Student Access Services, Student Life, Student Rights & Responsibilities, Campus Assistance, Referral and Education (CARE) Services, and Student Crisis Intervention. This position also collaborates with University Police on Threat Assessment. Departments reporting directly to the Dean of Students are Student Disability Resource Center, Veterans Services Center, Testing Center, Student Clubs & Activities Office, and Youth Educational Services. The incumbent establishes priorities for department direct reports to ensure compliance with state and federal laws (American Disabilities Act, Title IX requirements, etc.) and university and California State University system policies and procedures.

Duties: The essential job functions of this position include:

  • Provides direction in meeting the needs of students and guidance in ensuring services that align with the university's mission, vision, goals, and strategic plan
  • Provides outreach, assessment, and appropriate referrals to currently enrolled students in need of non-academic support and intervention services
  • Develops and maintains a proactive training plan for campus wide stakeholders focused on referrals, students in distress, and classroom management issues
  • Directly supervises the direct reports listed above and provides overall leadership for the delivery of services, including risk and liability management
  • Oversees investigation and adjudication of violations of the university's Student Code of Conduct, consultation regarding the Title IX sanctioning process, and other university policies and processes
  • Serves on the Student Affairs Leadership Team, Emergency Management Team, Data Manager Security, and University Policy Committee as well as other committees as assigned by the Vice President of Student Affairs
  • Works closely with Associated Students to provide training and guidance and to integrate these student leaders throughout the organization
  • Advises other campus community stakeholders regarding rights and responsibilities in delivering services and instruction
  • Develops and updates university policies and procedures with respect to student rights, responsibilities, and compliance with state and federal laws as well as CSU system policies
  • Oversees the Student Services Department Operations Center within the university's Emergency Operations Center
  • Assumes on-call responsibilities for critical incidents as required

    The Dean of Students must keep abreast of new and innovative practices in the field of Student Affairs and higher education. The incumbent should seek opportunities for professional development through professional associations, professional institutes and other opportunities for professional development.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in educational administration, higher education leadership or a related field
  • Eight years of experience in higher education with increased responsibility and a strong understanding of engaging and providing support for students
  • Leadership experience in a richly diverse environment, including a track record of individual action and institutional leadership
  • Demonstrated competence in overseeing student conduct and student advocacy concerns
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate data and data analysis into sound practice, management and decision-making

    Critical Success Factors Include:
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments with little to no instruction
  • Extensive and detailed knowledge of best practices for student conduct processes and procedures including Title IX and ADA requirements and guidelines
  • Extensive and detailed knowledge of state, federal, and system-wide regulations and laws that govern student affairs (ADA, OCR, CA Privacy Information Act, etc.)
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with students, parents, faculty, staff, and off-campus community members and agencies from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong commitment to equity and ability to align the philosophy of the Office of the Dean of Students with equity and inclusive practices
  • Strong budget management skills
  • Ability to analyze and define complex organizational policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view (conflict management)

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in a related field
  • Ten or more years of supervision and leadership experience
  • Experience managing town/gown relations that foster strong ties within the community
  • Ability to perform at the advanced level in the ten Professional Competency areas for Student Affairs Educators as outlined by ACPA and NASPA
