Basic Function

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia
Community College (NOVA) shall be to provide quality instruction for the
students. To accomplish this NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching
strategies and classroom management that fully engage the student
whether or not in a classroom, laboratory or online platform. Through
obtainment of their educational goals, NOVA faculty will help students
develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity, thus building
stronger citizens and enhancing the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach all levels of mathematics courses currently offered at NOVA such as
transfer-level math for liberal arts majors, precalculus, calculus, differential
equations, statistics, linear algebra, and discrete math and developmental
mathematics courses in algebra. (A full list of the courses currently offered

with students through academic advising, mentoring, honors classes, and
projects. Participate in and establish new initiatives that strengthen the
mathematics department.
Prepare for class, lecture, create and administer tests and other
assessments, and grade student work. Teach online classes, depending on
college needs. Promote student engagement and success; advise students,
meet with them during office hours, communicate with them. Contribute to
curriculum and course development. Partner with adjunct faculty. Participate
actively in division, campus, and college activities and committees. Perform
other duties as assigned. Full-time faculty must be available to teach day,
evening, weekend and online classes.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in mathematics; or a master’s degree with at least 18 semester graduate semester hours in mathematics (coursework in mathematics pedagogy cannot be counted toward the 18 required graduate semester hours). Proficiency in using technology in and outside the classroom.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in mathematics or one of the fields of engineering, physics,
and computer science with at least 18 semester credits at the graduate level
in mathematics and one of the other fields. Proficiency in using technology in
and outside the classroom. Teaching experience, especially in a community
college

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Expertise in the subject matter. Enthusiasm for teaching. Excellent
communication skills.
Proficient technical skills such as creation of online teaching resources and
online communication with students. Proficient in software widely used in
education such as Blackboard, MS Office, GSuite, etc.
