Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, health physics, engineering or other closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry.
Radiation Safety Officer and/or Laser Safety Officer experience.
Master’s Degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, health physics, engineering or other closely related field.

3+ years of supervisory experience.
7+ years of experience in laboratory safety or closely related field.

One or more of the following certifications or capable of achieving certification within 2 years: CHMM, CCHO, CBSP, CIH, ASP, CSP, CHP.

Trainings: HazWoper 40 hour, DOT Shipping, RCRA.

Job Description

This position supervises the Laboratory Safety Division of the EHSRM department and oversees the work of one or more safety specialists as well as any part-time workers and student workers assigned to the division. The person in this position is responsible for managing the division program and setting the schedule for work as well as establishing interactions with pertinent university community members and outside contractors and regulators. This position ensures knowledge of and compliance with all pertinent local, state and federal regulations in regards to laboratory safety. Areas covered by this division include: biological safety, chemical safety, radiation safety, X-ray safety, laser safety and art safety. Assists other divisions as needed. Carries out some occupational health and safety functions as needed.

Job Duties

1. Oversees laboratory inspection program and conducts inspections.
2. Oversees chemical hygiene plan and acts as the institution’s Chemical Hygiene Officer or oversees the CHO.
3. Develops and/or maintains all manuals and plans pertinent to the areas covered by Laboratory Safety.
4. Ensures university compliance with DEA and TXDPS regulations in regards to controlled substances and glassware.
5. Assists in developing, maintaining, tracking and conducting pertinent trainings such as, but not limited to HazCom and Bloodborne Pathogens.
6. Serves as a committee member on one or more university committees such as IACUC, IBC, University Laboratory Safety Committee or others as deemed appropriate.
7. Must effectively communicate in writing, verbally and in person with faculty, staff and students.
8. Reviews SOPs and protocols for various laboratories.
9. Oversees the Radiation Safety Program and serves as Radiation Safety Officer if qualified.
10. Oversees the Laser Safety Program and serves as the Laser Safety Officer if qualified.
11. Member of spill clean up team.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information to Applicants

May respond to emergencies on campus during the work day or after-hours. Will carry after hours phone on a rotating basis.
