The Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA currently has an opening for an Assistant Project Scientist to join the Laboratory of Dr. X. William Yang. The Yang Lab (http://yanglab.npih.ucla.edu/) applies mouse genetics and systems biology to study several neurodegenerative disorders and investigate the roles of mammalian basal ganglia in neuropsychiatric disorders. The Assistant Project Scientist will work as a member of a collaborative research team on a BRAIN Initiative-funded project to apply a new, genetic sparse labeling method to study dendritic morphologies of genetically-defined neuronal populations. This project will also involve collaborative efforts to develop new imaging and computational tools to acquire and register brainwide single neuron morphological data onto a standard reference mouse brain atlas for dissemination to the brain research community.

The Assistant Project Scientist will be responsible for planning, implementing, and managing the tissue processing and imaging pipeline necessary to generate large-scale imaging data. This individual will also manage large mouse colonies, including setup breeding and genetic crosses, weaning, and perform genotyping. In addition to conducting and overseeing the day-to-day research of this project, the Assistant Project Scientist will work with the PIs to: (1) ensure expedient and efficient production of high quality data; (2) troubleshoot technical difficulties and make adjustments to methods accordingly; (3) ensure standard operating procedures and IACUC policies are followed; (4) set benchmarks for deliverables, (5) keep track of expenditures, and (6) contribute to reports and publications, and (7) organize quarterly TC meeting and bi-annual face-time meeting with PIs and key personnel to discuss research progress. This individual may also be involved in teaching or supervising other researchers (e.g. entry level technicians, students) and contribute to generating progress reports, presentations, and publications of data from the study.

The position requires a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in one of the following fields: neuroscience, mouse genetics, or physiology, and at least three years of working experience in a relevant research field. The individual should have demonstrated background, preferably publications, to show a track-record in mouse genetics (especially mouse colony management), rodent behavioral and neuropathological studies, histology, light, fluorescent, and confocal microscopy, and data analyses. Experience in molecular biology is preferred but not required. Computer skills should include proficiency in productivity software (Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop/Illustrator), statistics, and imaging/image analysis software. Experience molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and quantitative image analyses is preferred, but not required. The person should be highly motivated, independent, organized and detail-oriented, have good verbal and written communication skills in English, and work well in a highly collaborative environment/project. Experience supervising others in research is also preferred.
