The National Humanities Alliance Foundation invites applications for a project director of the Study the Humanities initiative. The initiative supports faculty and administrators in making the case for the value of studying the humanities as an undergraduate. Working with National Humanities Alliance staff, the project director will: launch a comprehensive survey of strategies for recruiting students to the humanities; develop resources that highlight successful approaches and document their effect; and engage faculty and administrators with the research and resources created. The project is supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Founded in 2013 and located in Washington, D.C., the National Humanities Alliance Foundation is the supporting foundation for the National Humanities Alliance. The National Humanities Alliance is a nonpartisan, non-profit association founded in 1981. Membership in the National Humanities Alliance is open to all organizations with an interest in the humanities. More than 200 organizations are currently members of the NHA, including scholarly societies, humanities research centers, colleges, universities, and organizations of museums, libraries, historical societies, humanities councils, and higher education institutions.

Over the course of the fellowship, the project director will have the opportunity to develop expertise in best practices for promoting the value of the humanities on campus and gain experience in project management and advocacy.

Reporting Structure: The project director reports to the deputy director.

Term: This is a two-year position.

Job Classification: Exempt

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct research into approaches to making the case for studying the humanities to students and other audiences Develop profiles and briefing documents about successful strategies
  • Build relationships with faculty, administrators, and other campus stakeholders surrounding the initiative
  • Represent the project and present its results in a variety of public settings
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the deputy director

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a humanities or humanistic social science discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing content for large projects
  • Familiarity with higher education administration and the campus ecosystem
  • Experience with undergraduate education administration, admissions, or career counseling
  • Project management experience; a good ability to choose among alternatives and identify key priorities for work
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills
