Job Summary:

The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) is an advanced practice nurse who provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. Responsibilities are as follows:  Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols. Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, make referrals to other disciplines as indicated, write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain history relevant to patient care, order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the family. Evaluate outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiate changes in the nursing approach accordingly. Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements. Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient. Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care. Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care. Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development. Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit. May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician. May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit. May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting. Practice specific and invasive procedure privileges are detailed in each APNs Delineation of Privileges.  

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate competence and service as a role model for all clinical practice responsibilities in the NNP job description
  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee
  • Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol
  • Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed
  • Stabilize and transport patients as needed
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to NNP practice
  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate
  • Assure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care
  • Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures
  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring
  • Participate in providing in-service and outreach education program
  • Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians (s)
  • Serve as preceptor of NNP students
  • Help identify potential areas for nursing research

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:

  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing required Completion of approved NNP training required

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of clinical experience in neonatal nursing preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner required.
  • Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date required
  • Current license as registered nurse required
  • Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled license and DEA number required

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation and line placement preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of computers preferred
  • Proficiency in EPIC preferred
