Senior Associate Director for Instructional and Professional Development in the Center for Education Innovation & Learning in the Sciences (CEILS)

Overview of the Position: The CEILS Senior Associate Director for Instructional and Professional Development will be an expert in the design and implementation of in-person and online curriculum activities that broaden awareness among and increase engagement of UCLA undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars in diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Responsibilities also include the development of train-the-trainer programs, pedagogical resources, and teaching development courses for graduate student teaching assistants, postdoctoral teaching fellows, and faculty to support their adoption of inclusive and innovative instructional strategies. In addition, duties include independent coordination of UCLA's Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) program, a national professional development program for UCLA graduate students and postdoctoral scholars; in this role, the incumbent will lead multidisciplinary training and mentoring of future faculty campuswide, preparing them to embrace evidence-based teaching practices shown to be effective in diverse classrooms.

The position will be under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS).

Responsibilities:

Lead the development, assessment, and expansion of UCLA's CIRTL program.
o Interact with faculty and administrators in 40+ CIRTL institutions located across the U.S. (CIRTL network) to co-facilitate online courses as required for UCLA's membership in CIRTL (in-kind contributions to network); engage UCLA faculty and administrators as collaborators in this participatory effort.
o Represent UCLA at CIRTL in-person and online network events and meetings.
o Serve as UCLA representative on CIRTL network working group and leadership teams to execute cross-network initiatives such as improving online participation metrics, developing marketing tools, and evaluating effectiveness of CIRTL programming.
o Promote all cross-network events at UCLA via website and newsletter by coordinating communications with CEILS administrative staff.
o Recruit UCLA graduate students and postdocs to participate in online cross-network events and local CIRTL programming; track, analyze, and report metrics such as participation and impact.
o Coordinate communication with UCLA campus leadership and other personnel involved in CIRTL programming decisions, promotional efforts, and assessment; these include members of Graduate Division, the Office of Instructional Development, the Career Center, and CEILS.
o In collaboration with UCLA Writing Programs, UCLA faculty, and instructional designers, develop, co-teach, and promote participation in the multidisciplinary Scholars of Teaching as Research (STAR) program; courses in this program include:
GDPD 496A: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate Teaching
GDPD 496B: Teaching-as-Research
GDPD 496C: Implementing Teaching-as-Research
o Initiate and sustain collaborations with UCLA faculty in Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences to convert STEM-focused CIRTL programming to be inclusive of all disciplines and teaching contexts/modalities (e.g., formal and informal learning environments; online, in-person, and hybrid delivery mechanisms).
o In coordination with UCLA leadership of NSF INCLUDES Alliance grant, create new teaching development opportunities for UCLA graduate students and postdocs outside UCLA (i.e. internships with faculty at regional community colleges).

Mentor Teaching-as-Research (TAR) project participants.
o Mentor individual or groups of UCLA graduate students and postdocs conducting TAR projects; these include postdoctoral scholars in UCLA's NIH IRACDA-funded fellowship program, UPLIFT (UCLA Postdocs' Longitudinal Investment in Faculty Training); responsibilities include navigating relationships between faculty advisors and teaching mentors as well as helping participants manage priorities and improve communication with their research and teaching faculty mentors.
o Providing guidance to faculty teaching mentors at UPLIFT partner institution, Cal State Los Angeles (CSULA), with postdoctoral scholars conducting TAR projects.
o Act as a liaison between UCLA research mentors and CSULA teaching mentors to organize UPLIFT-sponsored research seminars.

Facilitate the career development of UCLA undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs.
o Coordinate and teach the undergraduate course LS110: Career Exploration in the Life Sciences; maintain relationships with campus collaborators such as Partnership UCLA, the College Development Office, the Career Center, and the Office of Instructional Development (OID).
o Train new instructors in career development and self-assessments to preparation for teaching course LS110.
o In collaboration with UCLA's Center for Educational Assessment in OID, evaluate and iteratively improve course LS110, reporting results and publishing education research findings in peer-reviewed journals.
o Engage math and physical sciences departments to explore expansion of course LS110.
o Direct the development and co-facilitate a career course for UCLA graduate students and postdocs called Exploring Careers Inside and Outside the Academy; collaborate with UCLA Career Center to integrate this course into the CIRTL network online course offerings; train CIRTL faculty to co-facilitate the course.

Lead initiatives to improve graduate student teaching assistant (TA) training.
o In collaboration with OID's TA Training Program (TATP) and the CEILS team, organize summer training academies for TA Consultants (course 495 graduate student instructors).
o With CEILS Director, co-teach LS 495, Preparation for College-Level Teaching in Life Sciences.
o Coordinate the assessment of TA training programs and 495 courses in Life and Physical Sciences, analyzing outcomes, making recommendations for curricular improvement, and disseminating/publishing education research findings in relevant peer-reviewed journals as participant in the National Biology Teaching Assistant Project (BioTAP).
o Facilitate cross-campus, multidisciplinary workshops on inclusive teaching, effective communication skills, and other areas critical to TA professional development including self-care and balancing research and teaching.

Provide instructional support and programming for current faculty within and outside UCLA.
o Coordinate with CEILS Director to diversify collaborations with campus leadership, faculty, and administrators outside Life and Physical Sciences, supporting education innovation and inclusivity efforts campuswide; responsibilities include facilitating faculty workshops promoting inclusive teaching practices.
o Administer the year-long Faculty Learning Program (FLP); responsibilities include providing instructional training for UCLA and community college STEM faculty and developing train-the-trainer modules for regional 2-yr and 4-yr partner institutions such as those participating in the NSF INCLUDES Alliance grant project.

Lead the development of grant proposals for extramural funding; efforts will include project conceptualization, connecting relevant campus and regional or national partners, grant proposal writing, and budget development.

Implement and administer grant-funded projects, including coordinating and executing the assessment and reporting activities, reviewing applications for selection of project-specific personnel, and managing project budgets.

Represent UCLA, CEILS, and CIRTL by attending and presenting at regional and national scientific and educational conferences.

Publish scholarly work related to education research, curriculum development, and teaching.

Act as a liaison for CEILS and CIRTL by attending campus meetings and events and serving on campus committees.

Qualifications and Application Instructions:

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) discipline, demonstrated training and experience in undergraduate and graduate education, and demonstrated ability to engage university faculty in activities surrounding teaching. Experience working with undergraduate and graduate students to facilitate active and collaborative learning. Ability to work with and manage large groups of undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty. Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and improve instructional materials and methods. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students in programs and activities such as workshops. Ability to manage time effectively and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of CEILS, the College, and the University.
