Job Details
The Associate Director of Applied Research will focus on applied research by studying unexplored domains in the field of student success and discovering innovative practices that lead to student success. Will lead a diverse team within Institutional Research to strengthen data integrity and improve program design through insightful analysis. This will allow NOVA to carry out studies that would result in actionable knowledge that can be applied to practice and used by the college to improve student access and success.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe Associate Director of Applied Research will combine creativity, critical thinking, and strategy to help clients visualize their data by developing custom reports and data visualization products using large datasets to transform data into actionable insights.
•Leads and conducts research project(s) and apply analytical and evaluative techniques, formulate conclusions and recommendations.
•Extensive knowledge of data sources, data transfer between different systems, and data mining & analysis will be essential to performing the duties of this position.
•Designs relevant data visualizations leveraging appropriate tools such as Tableau.
•Participate in problem solving, continuous improvement, and demonstrate strong dedication to quality and communication;
•Works with the NOVA community and in user and task analysis to maintain the customers’ perspective while maintaining client relationships at peer level. This will be done by
demonstrating excellent communication skills (listening, verbal and written) while engaging with diverse groups including NOVA faculty and staff, senior administration, college partners, peer colleges and community.
•Present research and other presentations on behalf of the Vice President, Institutional Effectiveness and for NOVA.
•Performs technical development and integration as part of an agile team toward the implementation of the solution;
•Assists team members in completing their work or acquiring skills while contributing to maintaining a collaborative work environment.
•Will maintain workflows, quality standards, deadlines for assigned unit.
Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, information systems, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and applicable experience and/or training. Experience SAS programming; Significant experience in the application of research techniques, methodology, statistical analysis and interpretation; Significant experience leading and conducting research projects. Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills with the ability to multitask effectively; Expert knowledge of data sources, data transfer between systems and data mining and analysis.
Preferred QualificationsMaster’s degree in social sciences, information systems, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and applicable experience and/or training. Expert experience in research and analysis, organizing and leading projects; extensive knowledge of college policies and procedures and the complex practices and culture of community colleges.
Experience working in a community college research setting; knowledge of VCCS policies and higher education research practices and procedures; Demonstrated ability to lead a team through implementation and completion of projects including tracking the progress and the ability to reassess goals as priorities change. Background should include leadership experience; Background should also include presentation opportunities.
•Excellent Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programming skills, working knowledge and application of research techniques, methodology, statistical analysis and interpretation with the ability to translate the data analysis into business recommendations
•Expert skill in mainframe/PC applications as a resource tool, and the knowledge and ability to train and lead others in those tools
•Demonstrated ability to lead and conduct research projects and apply analytical and evaluative techniques, formulate conclusions and recommendations
•Excellent analytical, writing and communication skills to bring NOVA to the forefront of applied research Extensive knowledge of data sources, data transfer between different systems, and data mining & analysis
•Some knowledge of Higher Education policies and procedures, and the complex practices and culture of community colleges
•Proficiency with leading and emerging visualization and reporting tools such as Tableau
•Highly organized with the ability to prioritize workflow and handle competing or changing priorities, with the ability to use forward thinking to anticipate critical deadlines and upcoming projects to ensure a smooth and steady work atmosphere within the department while fulfilling the needs of our customers
•Experience working with functional practitioners, key stakeholders, and clients, to gather and interpret user/system requirements into design specifications
•Expert ability to lead and execute projects and track their progress
