The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, English as a Second Language (ESL), Foothill College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Foothill College is seeking a dynamic, motivated, and collegial full-time ESL instructor with a strong commitment to the missions of California’s community colleges. The successful candidate will teach the range of credit and non-credit ESL classes, including listening/speaking, grammar, and basic-advanced composition/critical reading. Qualified candidates may teach transfer-level classes in freshman composition for non-native speakers of English. Assignment may include evening classes. The successful candidate will participate in ESL Department activities such as curriculum development, selection of texts, placement, and pathway alignment from adult-school, noncredit ESL, credit ESL, and transfer-level English.

Faculty also are responsible for developing and assessing Student Learning Outcomes. We seek faculty members who are themselves the life-long learners and independent thinkers we wish our students to become. We are looking for educators who are creative and responsible in their use of time and resources, who possess a clear vision for creating a democratic learning environment and who can translate that vision into practice.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis; OR bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent.

NOTE: Official Transcripts verifying qualifications will be REQUIRED prior to an offer of employment. Applicants who have international transcripts must obtain transcripts that are evaluated by an independent educational-equivalency evaluation company and obtain an English translation (if necessary). These services are to be done at the applicant’s expense. Both Foothill De Anza CCD employees and external candidates must submit transcripts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Qualifications to teach English composition: Master’s degree in English with a TESL emphasis; OR bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL AND master’s degree in English, composition.
  2. Strong background, experience, and graduate course work in teaching advanced, college-level composition and reading to non-native speakers of English.
  3. Experience teaching all English language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar) to a wide range of students.
  4. Experience teaching, assistant teaching, or tutoring at the secondary, community college, or university level.
  5. Ability to speak and write standard American English sufficient to serve as a linguistic model for students.
  6. Ability to interact well with an extremely diverse and multicultural student population, including both resident and F-1 visa students.
  7. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a program team, to design, revise, and implement new and existing curricula, and/or to initiate new projects.
  8. Active participation in relevant professional organizations.
  9. Knowledge of and/or experience with instructional technology and/or learning management systems in a classroom setting.

    • A text-based writing prompt that you would assign and distribute to students in an advanced-level ESL composition class at the beginning of the term
    • A maximum two-page rationale that explains:
      • The text you would assign and why
      • The evaluation criteria to assess the student writing
      • Three key reading and/or writing skills you would teach to help students successfully respond to the prompt
  5. An attached syllabus and schedule for a lower intermediate-level integrated skills class for ESL students.

HIRING RANGE: $57,066.00 - $93,722.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant’s verified education and experience. NOTE: The salary advertised with this position is based on the 2017-2018 salary schedule. Effective July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019, the position will receive an additional temporary 5% increase. On July 1, 2019 salaries will revert to the 2017-2018 salary schedule unless another agreement is reached.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 10-months per year
