31-Mar-2019 Close All Job Summary The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance (OIEC) welcomes applications for an Equity Officer (Investigator). The position of Equity Officer (Investigator) is a strategic position that aids in the prevention and elimination of incidents of protected class harassment, discrimination, sexual misconduct, intimate partner abuse, stalking, and related retaliation at CU Boulder. Equity Officers educate the CU Boulder community about the University policies on sexual misconduct, protected class discrimination and harassment, and amorous relationships and inform these constituents about the procedures to file a complaint and the investigative process. The Equity Officer will work with others on the case resolutions team to address allegations of potential policy violations and utilize other remedies-based options to tailor specific resolutions to the unique facts and circumstances of an incident(s). OIEC Equity Officers work collaboratively with numerous on and off campus resources, such as the Office of Victim Assistance, Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, Residence Life, CU Police Department, Student Support and Case Management, Office of University Counsel, Gender and Sexuality Center, Counseling and Psychiatric Services, Office of ADA Compliance, Human Resources, Ombuds Office, Faculty Affairs, Boulder Police Department, Moving to End Sexual Assault (MESA), and Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN).

We also coordinate the provision of accommodations and interim remedies as necessary and provide educational trainings and workshops for all members of the university community, including faculty, staff, and students. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Administrative and Analytical Responsponsibilities
  • Conduct investigations by gathering information in an efficient manner, including interviewing complainants, respondents, and all relevant witnesses in a supportive manner that considers culturally diverse needs.
  • Collect other relevant documentation and evidence.
  • Analyze and synthesize information gained through the investigation process and compose a final report detailing the information obtained and the reasoning used to reach a conclusion.
  • Provide thorough information to parties, including details regarding the policies and procedures utilized and enforced by the OIEC.
  • Evaluate the nature and urgency of a situation in collaboration with the case resolutions team to determine the appropriate course of action
  • Refer parties to necessary resources and coordinate such referrals with those agencies and departments.
  • Establish and maintains case files.
  • Perform database entry, maintains electronic files, and ensures cases are entered appropriately and consistently.
Campus Involvement
  • Cultivate and maintain campus partnerships.
  • Conduct research and assist with program development.
  • Serve on committees and attend open forums, trainings, and seminars to foster and increase connection with other campus resources.
  • Research trainings applicable to OIEC policies/procedures, including changes in the law that impact the OIEC, and make suggestions to the OIEC regarding appropriate and/or necessary trainings regarding improvement of policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Associate Vice Chancellor to advise campus administrators on policy and procedural matters as needed.

  • Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree.
    • Appropriate experience may substitute for the BA degree requirement on a year for year basis.
  • Must have at least one year of experience conducting internal investigations into sexual misconduct and/or protected class discrimination and harassment.
  • Substitution: J.D. with coursework in employment or civil rights law; or advanced degree in a relevant field (for example, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, ethics and compliance, social work, etc.) plus general investigative experience may substitute for the sexual misconduct and protected class discrimination and harassment investigative experience.
What You Will Need
  • Position requires extensive professional training in the area of discrimination and harassment law, including civil rights laws such as Title IX, Title VI, and Title VII.
  • Position requires specialized training in conducting investigations and understanding and interpreting federal, state, and local laws, which are often complex and require a high level of analytical thinking.
  • Position requires the equity officer to demonstrate professionalism and cultural awareness during interactions with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Position requires fair and equitable decision-making throughout an investigation.
  • Position requires that investigative decisions/reports and advice be based on logical reasoning and clear written analysis.
  • Position requires extensive knowledge of the policies enforced and procedures utilized by the OIEC.
  • Position requires interviewing numerous individuals in order to assess individual needs and recommend appropriate resources and courses of action.
  • Position requires collecting information from a diverse population in an efficient and supportive manner with awareness and consideration of cultural needs.
  • Position requires an individual to assess many courses of action and determine the appropriate response.
  • Position requires an individual to accommodate the needs of the parties, which requires a thorough knowledge of the resources both on and off campus.
  • Position requires strong verbal communication skills, significant writing experience, and solid research skills for writing reports.
  • Position requires a collaborative approach and teamwork with fellow equity officers.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • J.D. or advanced degree in a relevant field (for example, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, ethics and compliance, social work, etc.).
  • One year of experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Teaching or training experience, preferably in protected class discrimination and harassment and employment law or in a higher education context.
