Senior Associate Director, Principal Gifts

(Development Officer 4)

Medical Center Development

Stanford Medicine seeks an experienced principal gift officer in Medical Center Development (MCD). Stanford Medicine comprises Stanford University School of Medicine - a premier research-intensive medical school - and Stanford Health Care - a nationally recognized hospital system. As one of the largest fundraising units in Stanford's development enterprise, MCD has 140 team members and secures $300M+ annually to support strategic institutional initiatives.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Principal Gifts team works to secure gifts of $10M+ from individuals or their personal foundations. The seven-member team will include three full-time gift officers as well as a program manager, hospital liaison, project manager, and administrative support.

The new Senior Associate Director, Principal Gifts officer will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting, or arranging for the solicitation of, individuals who fit the program criteria. They will engage with a multitude of individuals including senior academic leaders, faculty, university officers and staff, volunteers, patients, alumni, friends and foundation representatives, and others outside Stanford during the course of their fundraising. With its donor-centric approach to development, every staff member within the University's development program plays a role in providing the University's donors with the service and attention that ensures an exceptionally positive and fulfilling philanthropic experience.

The principal gift officer should be able to operate collaboratively in assigned areas and take responsibility for prospect strategy and engagement, complex proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities.

This role has three defining dimensions:

  • The disciplined management of a portfolio of donor relationships (approximately 25 initially) with consistent focus, high-touch engagement, and stewardship that leads to successful solicitation strategies. In time, add new long-term viable relationships.

  • The ability to work closely with academic leaders and faculty to shape compelling ideas that will attract transformational gifts based on institutional initiatives and priorities.

  • The ability to work in collaboration with colleagues in the University principal gifts program and with officers of other schools to coordinate cultivation and solicitation of prospects with multiple interests.

    CORE DUTIES:

  • Identify and develop new prospect populations to grow the non-alumni pipeline for Stanford Medicine priorities.

  • Main focus will initially be dedicated to grateful patient discovery work.

  • Work in teams with other fundraisers across the University to develop solicitation strategies in support of our cross-disciplinary priorities in science and biomedicine.

  • Personally manage a portfolio of high-potential individual prospects through the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycles. Forge long-term relationships with these individuals to cultivate interest in Stanford Medicine that will lead to principal level gifts. The portfolio will include prospects with interests that cut across the frontiers of bioscience, clinical research and care, and education.

  • Staff academic leaders within Stanford Medicine and other key institutional representatives in their contact with Principal Gift donors/prospects, and build their own personal relationship with them.

  • Work with patients, alumni, and friends of Stanford and their advisors, sometimes behind the scenes through high-level volunteers, both external and internal to the University.

  • Collaborate with other University staff, academic leaders, and faculty to develop gift ideas and strategies and to foster relationships that will be productive for Stanford.

  • Travel to visit prospects often in tandem with the President of Stanford Health Care, the Dean of School of Medicine, and faculty leaders; work proactively to bring prospects to campus for substantive visits and engagements.

  • Provide stewardship for certain Principal Gift donors managed centrally, in coordination with other stewardship units and field fundraisers.
