The position of Communications Manager is critical in the outreach to more than 166,000 Northern Arizona University alumni. This position serves as an advisor in the division for Alumni Engagement communications and supports the strategic direction, development, implementation, and evaluation of on-brand communications across numerous communication channels including print, email, web, and social media. In collaboration with division and university partners, this position will develop, coordinate, and implement strategic communication deliverables to ensure alumni communications success in meeting its objectives. This position manages the alumni brand strategy for social media content, manages all department communication channels, content and messaging, serves as a project manager for the division on the development strategy, copy and creative on digital fundraising efforts across alumni communications platforms, and oversees the department communications budget. This position reports to the Director of Alumni Engagement.

  • Manage alumni communications and project work flow to ensure all materials produced are of a consistent and uniform professional quality in accordance with university brand standards.
  • Lead the content strategy and project execution for alumni communications including e-newsletters, Pine alumni magazine, digital fundraising, web, and social media.
  • Oversee simultaneous, high-profile communication projects, including Pine, e-newsletter, social and digital fundraising campaigns, from inception to completion, with primary responsibility for project plans, content, deliverables, and analysis.
  • Deliver innovative and relevant social media content including posts, pictures, video, graphics, blogs, digital ads, etc.) for NAU Alumni channels. Promote a strong, consistent presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Flickr. Partner with on-and off-campus communication affiliates to elevate university communication efforts.
  • Support communications and outreach for alumni engagement programming including student and alumni networking, alumni career development, alumni chapters, and alumni benefits.
  • Analyze effectiveness of communication methods through platform analytics. Perform social content audits to improve performance. Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual communication metrics reports shared with university leadership and the Alumni Association and Foundation boards.
  • Serve as one of the department’s liaison with Lipman Hearne and NAU Printing Services.
  • Ensure the NAU Near You alumni chapter communications, social media, outreach, etc. are consistent with university communication priorities and alumni outreach efforts.
  • Provide oversight and content direction of alumni website to ensure alumni web pages adhere to university design, branding, content, and user experience.
  • Manage the day-to-day workflow of communications programming in the department.
  • Supervise the Alumni Engagement Communication Coordinator and communications student worker.
  • Guide and contribute to division campaign communications as a member of the division’s communications team and Giving Day core leadership team.
  • Advise director, other division leaders, and college/unit leaders on best practices and content strategy for alumni communications.
  • Conduct ongoing advancement and communications research and advise division leadership on evolving technology, social media, and digital communication best practices.
  • Create, manage, and evaluate the alumni communications budget, ensuring accountability.
  • Represent Alumni Engagement on a variety of university-wide committees and taskforces with relevance to department goals.
  • Provide direction, advice, strategic planning, problem-solving and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Support overall alumni and donor stewardship efforts.
  • Attend and provide on-site coverage for various Alumni Engagement events, including Homecoming, commencement, reunions, chapter events, Alumni Association Board meetings, etc.
  • Manage incoming communication related social media inquiries and messages providing prompt, accurate and professional responses.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work required.

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year the Northern Arizona University Police Department releases an annual security report. The report is a result of the federal law known as the Clery Act and contains policy statements that address the school’s policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security including policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses. The report contains three years of data for Clery reportable crime statistics for the campus along with the most current year’s Fire Safety Report, which includes policy statements and fire statistics for Flagstaff on-campus student housing.

The budgeted salary amount is $60,000.

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
