Job Summary Requisition Number: 29816 Job Title: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY TECHNICIAN, SENIOR Working Title: Senior EH&S Technician Salary: $23.18 - $27.89 hourly Job Type: Career Department Name: 3401-ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY Department Website URL: Job Summary Statement: Under general supervision of a Senior Health Physicist, perform the following responsibilities to assure compliance with governmental regulations, license requirements, and UCLA Policies and Procedures. This position also receives direction from the Principal Technicians and Health Physicists responsible for the assigned programs. Receive and distribute radioactive material packages, collect and prepare radioactive waste for final disposition, conduct laboratory safety inspections and advise research staff on radiation safety requirements and principles, perform radiation measurements, collect and analyze samples for counting with spectrometric equipment, calibrate radiation detection instruments, implement contamination control methods for radiotherapy rooms, decontaminate laboratories and select hospital and campus areas, and respond to radioactive material spills. Provide routine work status updates to health physics staff, as appropriate. Interface daily with various members of campus including students, faculty, facilities management, medical staff, and administration. Complete and maintain reports and records via computer, forms, and logbooks. Serve as a member of campus emergency response team. Occasional technical memoranda must be written using knowledge of radiation terms. Other duties assigned by Program Health Physicists and Principal Technicians or assigned by the supervising Senior Health Physicist or the Radiation Safety Officer. Percentage of Time: 100 Shift Start: 8:00 am Shift End: 5:00 pm function checkForSelectedStatus(){ return true;} Qualifications for Position 11 Records Qualifications Required/Preferred Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or two years of college including appropriate science courses and one year of experience in an environmental health and safety program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Required Working knowledge of radiation instruments. Preferred Familiarity with mathematics sufficient to use instruments, perform surveys, and handle waste by applying radioactive decay, inverse square law, and simple dose formulae. Required Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, administrators, managers, subordinates and academia. Required Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to handle 600-pound drums with mechanical assistance in the waste program. Required Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Required Ability to make oral presentations to persuade others to accept a specific action, or opinion and also to provide information to explain procedures, policies, etc. Required Working knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety codes to assess, develop, and provide accurate information to the campus community. Preferred Skill in setting priorities, which accurately reflect the relative importance of the job responsibilities. Required Skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical reports to explain the results of environmental health studies. Required Skill in working independently and following through on assignments.
