Vice President for Institutional Advancement
As a member of the President’s Senior Staff, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement works collaboratively with the senior leadership team to fulfill the College’s mission, ensure financial growth, and promote an environment of continuous improvement.
This position serves as the Chief Advancement Officer and has a major role in positioning the College for growth by designing and implementing effective and comprehensive institutional advancement programs, recruiting and developing talented team members focused toward significantly increasing constituent involvement and fundraising outcomes, serving as an executive liaison with the President to the Board of Trustees regarding Institutional Advancement initiatives, and ensuring a coordinated approach to development that supports the College’s top strategic priorities.
The advancement division is responsible for annual fund giving, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts and gift planning, endowment, capital campaigns, and alumni and constituent relations.Essential FunctionsGeneral
- Advance the mission, vision, and short- and long-term goals of the College in concert with the President and senior leadership team.
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with members of the Board of Trustees, key alumni, parents, staff, faculty, coaches, and campus departments whose cooperation is essential to effective outreach and fundraising.
- Serve as an exemplary College advocate in the community with local leaders, religious organizations, business and corporate partnerships, and other leaders, and build relationships that closely link the community with the College.
- Be active and involved in the advancement profession and keep Barton visible among higher education peer institutions.
- Travel is required. The Vice President must be willing to travel extensively in his or her work with donors and as a representative of the College.
- Develop annual plans and budgets for alumni and parent relations, annual fund, gift planning, comprehensive campaigns, major gifts, grants development, stewardship, and advancement services.
- Manage an active donor and prospect portfolio of approximately 100-125 who are capable of documenting commitments of $50,000 or more.
- Secure 100 quality visits per year, 8-10 per month.
- Develop an annual plan to secure $1 – $2 million in outright gifts and/or new commitments.
- Develop strategies for each prospect in their portfolio based on the gift cycle, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
- Ensure dynamic processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Devise and implement effective internal and external messaging and methods of advancement communication.
- Manage and update strategies and key next steps as necessary.
Provide management oversight for staff with a concentration on accountability and clear annual goals to ensure:
- Current and prospective benefactors are moved in a timely fashion to solicitation and completion of gifts.
- Direct stewardship contacts and other contacts are positive and purposeful in regard to donor relations.
- Timely submission of contact and expense reports and utilization of the technical tools of fundraising.
- A robust system for recording and reporting with the database that is steered toward capturing and sharing accurate, timely, and effective information.
- Continual staff training to confirm compliance with IRS regulations and to guarantee the integrity and security of information.
Serve as the staff liaison for Institutional Advancement to the Board of Trustees and Trustee IA Committee to:
- Inform the Trustee IA Committee and College leadership about trends, issues, and best practices in philanthropy in order to recommend and implement policy changes.
- Work with the President and Trustee IA Committee to establish and implement short- and long-range fundraising strategies, including capital campaign-related goals and objectives to secure funding for college priorities.
A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience as a senior-level advancement professional in higher education is preferred. A strong work ethic, personal integrity, and ability to be discreet in handling confidential and proprietary information appropriately is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required with ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies. Strategic thinking and planning skills with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment are required.
