(Job #18-76) Instructional Support Technician II, Laboratory Preparator, $3,123-$5,485/month. Appointments are normally made at the beginning of the salary range. This is a temporary, full-time, benefitted, 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months with pay and benefits over 12 months) position in the Department of Biological Sciences. Anticipated starting date is August 1, 2019.

Position Summary: The Laboratory Preparator provides instructional classroom support in the areas of microbiology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, and general biology, as well as other instructional support for independent study and courses in botany as required. This position maintains approximately 800 bacterial, viral, and eukaryotic stock cultures for approximately twelve supported classes. Duties include the preparation of media, reagents, laboratory supplies, and live microbiological and biological cultures; the set-up and breakdown of labs in microbiology and general biology; ordering of supplies; and the supervision of student assistants. The incumbent is also responsible for first line maintenance and repair of minor equipment used in conjunction with the classrooms supported.

Duties:
  • Prepares and dispenses culture media and reagents
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants
  • Maintains inventory of all supplies and equipment
  • Prepares budget requests
  • Oversees the repair and replacement of equipment
  • Maintains quality control system for cultures, media, and reagents
  • Maintains stock culture collections of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms
  • Responsible for the proper disposal of all bio-hazardous waste generated within the department associated with classroom and research activities in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines, and maintaining appropriate disposal records

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications:
    Equivalent to three years of experience producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a Biological Sciences discipline. Two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a Biological Sciences discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a Biological Sciences discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience. At least one year of experience in the preparation and quality control of microbiological media and reagents and the handling of bacterial, viral, and eukaryotic microorganisms is required.

    The ability to occasionally work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, is a condition of employment.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Detailed Knowledge of:
  • Underlying principles, information, methods and techniques required for maintenance of bacteria, bacteriophages, and eukaryotic microorganisms and the technical ability to apply this knowledge effectively in the laboratory
  • Established protocol to maintain a collection of microorganisms in long term storage media at -80 C, -20C, and 4 C, as well as knowledge of room temperature techniques

    Working knowledge of:
  • Principles and methods related to production and quality control of bacteriological media and reagents
  • Methods of DNA extraction, DNA electrophoresis and modern analytic techniques
  • Correct handling procedures for pathogenic organisms, toxic and hazardous chemicals
  • County, state, and federal hazardous materials regulations, including those governing the disposal of biological waste
  • Microscopy, with the ability to perform first-line maintenance/repair within the classroom
  • Sufficient academic education and experience enabling the proficient use of laboratory equipment and workspace

    Skills:
  • Word processing, spreadsheet, and database management skills

    Ability to:
  • Lift and carry 50 pounds and demonstrate dexterity sufficient for work such as slide and culture preparation
  • Adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment
  • Plan, organize, and schedule work of student assistants
  • Supervise and coordinate several part-time employees and assist selected students in the use of equipment and reagents while maintaining an effective working environment
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and private medical agencies
  • Maintain records
  • Store, handle and use chemical reagents - particularly strong acids and bases, as well as mutagenic / carcinogenic / teratogenic substances
  • Operate, trouble shoot problems, perform minor repair, or oversee repair, of technical and scientific equipment commonly found in the Microbiology and General Biology laboratories (autoclaves, centrifuges, electrophoresis equipment, dispensing equipment, incubators, pH equipment and laboratory refrigeration)
  • Read and comprehend techniques and developments within the fields of Microbiology, Genetics, Molecular and Cell Biology as presented in academic journals, and work with appropriate staff and faculty to apply or modify those techniques for the classroom
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Biology, Microbiology, or closely related field
  • Experience handling biological and hazardous waste
