This is a two-year fixed term position. The investigator will have split duties: 50% Title IX Office and 50% Office of Community Standards.


Stanford University, recognized as one of the most prestigious and innovative academic and research institutions in the world, has an opening for a full-time Investigator to conduct Title IX/Compliance Investigations and individual student and group conduct investigations involving alleged violations of the Honor Code, Fundamental Standard, or other University student conduct policies (hereinafter, “Investigator”). Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender (sex), sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, relationship (dating) violence and stalking. The Fundamental Standard sets the University's standard of conduct for individual students and groups. The Honor Code articulates University expectations in establishing and maintaining the highest standards in academic work.


Job Purpose


The Investigator will report 50% to the University's Title IX Coordinator and Director of Equity Investigations (hereinafter, “Coordinator”) and 50% to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Office of Community Standards (hereinafter, “Director”). Under the direction of the Coordinator and the Director, the Investigator will coordinate with campus offices and partners including Student Affairs, the Sexual Harassment Policy Office (SHPO), the Office of Sexual Assault and Relationship Abuse Education & Response (SARA Office), faculty, Residential Education, the Graduate Life Office, etc.


Perform investigations in support of compliance activities and address the adequacy and effectiveness of related policies, systems, processes, and controls across Stanford University. Compliance areas include sexual harassment, Title IX, ADA, EEO/Affirmative Action and institutional compliance. The Investigator will also be expected to perform case management and intake interviews. The Investigator is a core member of the team who will be called upon to manage cases, resolve cases, and prepare cases for hearing.


Responsibilities

  • For Title IX matters, collaborate and consult with the Coordinator regularly to monitor and manage Title IX incidents to ensure an efficient and effective response to reports and complaints.

  • For Office of Community Standards (“OCS”) matters, collaborate and consult with the Director to receive reports of alleged student misconduct and determine appropriate OCS response, which may include referral to another office or initiation of a formal investigation. Notify responding student of the concern and names of the reporting parties. After investigation, determine if there is sufficient evidence to file formal charges.

  • Serve as the Investigator for cases alleging student-related sexual assault, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, relationship (dating) violence, stalking, retaliation, violations of the Honor Code, Fundamental Standard, and other University student conduct policies.

  • Interview the impacted party, respondent, and relevant witnesses. Gather relevant evidence. Act as a neutral party through all aspects of investigation and ensure a prompt, fair, and neutral process for all parties. Advise impacted parties and respondents of their rights. Maintain a high level of confidentiality during all proceedings.

  • Ensure a well-documented Title IX, OCS, or other compliance investigative process. Maintain accurate and thorough records and notes of investigatory process. Create comprehensive written investigative reports for the Coordinator that clearly identify the issues investigated, summarize the evidence, make findings under University policy, and recommend appropriate remedial steps.

  • Provide periodic, timely updates regarding the status of complaints received and investigations in progress to the Coordinator for Title IX matters and the Director for OCS matters.

  • Collaborate with the Coordinator and Director to identify and address any systemic problems. Work with other university stakeholders to ensure Title IX and OCS policies are communicated to all constituencies.

  • Identify and integrate promising practices in the Title IX investigation arena into knowledge base and practice. Stay abreast of regulations and statutes relating to gender-based violence, including but not limited to Title IX, Clery, and VAWA.

  • Create and facilitate training/presentations to students/student groups and employees regarding related policies and identifying and integrating best practices into the complaint resolution process.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.


    Minimum Requirements


    Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required and 4 years of relevant experience. Law or other graduate degree and a minimum of 10 years relevant experience such as a law enforcement investigator or other related field strongly preferred.

  • Significant experience conducting trauma-informed, fair investigations alleging discrimination based on sex, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking, is required.

  • Knowledge, experience, and training in handling issues related to gender-based violence.

  • Experience working in higher education strongly preferred.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Title IX and VAWA and other applicable laws and regulations is required.

  • Knowledge of best practices as they relate to institutions of higher education compliance with Title IX and VAWA.

  • Ability to manage multiple, on-going and complex caseload of incidents and complaints;

  • Effective project management and organizational skills.


  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills with an emphasis on education and training for a variety of constituencies.

  • Ability to guide, advise and support the training and learning process with respect to Title IX and VAWA compliance.


  • Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information.


  • Ability to build relationships and establish collaborative partnerships across the institution.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators) with diplomacy and tact.


  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.

  • Maintenance of professional qualifications through on-going training and professional development; and

  • Ability to act independently, take initiative and exercise sound judgment.

  • Although generally this position is active during regular business hours with minimal travel expectations, occasional evenings are required, and the position requires being willing to check email and respond to urgent questions in evenings and on weekends.
