Position Description

This person reports to the Dean of the School of Advanced Manufacturing and Transportation, and works directly with the Professional Truck Driving (CDL) Faculty Instructor in the operation of the Truck Driving program. This is a part-time position located in Merrill. This position will work 25 hours per week, for 44 out of 52 weeks per year. The hours are Tuesday - Thursday 7:30 a.m - 4:00 p.m. This is a grant funded position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities:
1. Essential Functions
a. Assist Truck Driving Instructor as requested.
b. As requested by the instructor, assist students practicing on various driving techniques.
c. Recommend procedural and safety discussions topics to the instructors based on observed student practices.
d. Treat all students and customers with respect at all time.
e. Issue driving procedures and assist instructors by ensuring students operate vehicles in a safe manner.
f. At the instructor's request, assist with remediation of students.
g. Participate in in-service training and industrial workshops pertaining to the operation and applications of vehicles.
h. Assist the program instructors with the procurement of materials and supplies (including pickup and delivery).
i. Assist the instructors with the setting up of activities for students.
j. Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments.
k. Monitor attendance and use of vehicles.
l. Assist in the documentation of maintenance of vehicles.
m. Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment within the lab.
n. Supervise the activities of work-study students as directed by the instructor.

2. Specific Functions
a. Prepare track and vehicles for student use.
b. Monitor the use of vehicles and track.
c. Demonstrate skills as needed with the direction of the instructors.
d. Report repair requirements on all vehicles to instructors.
e. Assist the instructors in monitoring students on operational safety.
f. Maintain proficiency in the truck driving field as needed to support the Truck Driving program.

Qualifications

Two years post-secondary education preferred and/or two years' experience appropriate for the position. Two years (4,000 hours) occupational experience appropriate to the position. Thorough understanding of the truck driving industry and terms, including DOT requirements, CDL testing, and proper safety protocols. Must possess a valid Wisconsin CDL, and have the ability to pass the college insurance standards as well as adhere the DOT testing guidelines and regulations. Must be able to work with students of various backgrounds, ages and capabilities in an educational setting. The Assistant must be able to provide student feedback professionally and have adequate computer skills to assist students with course software.
