I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is seeking an Executive Director, SMHS Strategy & Development.

DAR is responsible for leading the university’s alumni and fundraising efforts. SMHS is the 11th oldest medical school in the country and the first in the nation’s capital. Since its establishment, the school has been at the forefront of medical education, and has grown to include highly-ranked programs in the health and biomedical sciences. This position is an integral component to achieving aspirational fundraising goals.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer for the Medical & Health Enterprises (M/HE), the Executive Director serves on the development leadership team of the evolving and growing M/HE. The position’s primary focus is to develop and implement initial strategies and tactics tailored for the SMHS and its new organization structure. Critical leader and peer relationships include 1) Vice President, DAR, 2) Dean, SMHS, 3) AVP Principal and Planned Gifts and Co-Interim Head of SMHS, and 4) DAR AVP, Campaign Strategy Qualifications amongst other critical stakeholders across the university.

Responsibilities:

Works with leadership to create implementation workplans in critical program areas that include timelines, measurable objectives, and dashboards, etc.

Implements a prospective donor pipeline for major and principal gifts, including alumni, grateful patients, community leaders, and corporate/foundations.

Manages a portfolio of major donor prospects and leads by example.

Manage process improvement for the major gifts program, including portfolio review, assignments, proposal development, and donor relations.

Manages the process for identification and hiring of qualified job candidates for the organization.

Contributes positively to change the culture in the current M/HE development office.

Guides the process for creating a case for support and fundraising priorities for the M/HE

Establishes active partnerships with the central DAR offices/programs of Principal and Planned Gifts, Information Management, Research and Relations, Stewardship, and Campaign Planning, etc.

Helps ensure alignment with overarching DAR strategies, objectives and culture.

This position will perform other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that relate to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree with preference for a graduate degree.

Seven plus years of fundraising experience in Medicine and Health settings.

Expertise in a complex environment for leading and participating in productive fundraising teams, major gifts pipeline development, proposal development, and collaboration with peers.

History of successful project management toward specific objectives, deliverables, and milestones.

Successful experience in relationship building and fundraising activity with Deans, Academic Medical leadership, and physician faculty,

Notable fundraising success at the six- and seven-figure levels with a personal donor portfolio, in teams, and in collaboration with development officers who have central and school-based duties.

Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Demonstrated excellent integrity, maturity, judgment, and collegiality in complicated settings currently undergoing significant change culturally, organizationally, and programmatically.

Ability to work independently and involve leadership as required.

Ability to travel locally and nationally when necessary and to work on occasional nights and weekends.
