Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Aquatic Contaminants

The School of the Environment (TSE) (https://www.trentu.ca/environment) at Trent University invites applications from qualified candidates for a Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Aquatic Contaminants. The successful applicant will have expertise in the characterization or source identification of emerging or legacy contaminants (organic or inorganic) supported by a variety of funding agencies. Priority will be given to applicants who have experience with international projects and are able to contribute to “science to policy bridging” in collaboration with government agencies and international organizations. Target research fields include, but are not restricted to, the identification of novel chemical tracers of pollution and isotopic tracer technologies, environmental forensics and the interplay between the fate of contaminants in aquatic environments and climatic change.

Trent University possesses extensive facilities for field - and laboratory-based research in aquatic contaminants. The Trent Water Quality Centre (WQC) (http://www.trentu.ca/wqc) is one of the most advanced analytical laboratories in Canada, with a comprehensive array of mass spectrometry facilities for determining trace quantities and natural isotopic abundances of chemicals found in water and other environmental media such as soils, plants and animals. The TSE, in association with the WQC and the International Institute for Environmental Studies (IIES) offer unique opportunities for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. The WQC has both the instrumentation and the support staff to facilitate a world-class researcher in the proposed area of research, and the IIES can provide a range of opportunities for international collaboration. With both science and policy dimensions to this field, the successful candidate would have a role in our existing Environmental Science, Environmental Geoscience and Water Science undergraduate degrees, in addition to the Environmental and Life Sciences (PhD, MSc) graduate programs and the newly established Masters in Instrumental Chemical Analysis (MSc) program.

The appointed CRC will be expected to currently hold (or be eligible to be appointed to) a tenured position at the rank of Full Professor. A substantial resume of scholarly publication, an ongoing program of research, a background of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a successful record of MSc and PhD supervision is required. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop research collaborations with faculty in the TSE and associated units (e.g. chemistry, forensics, biology, WQC).

Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, a copy of three of the applicant’s most influential publications, and a comprehensive Canada Research Chair vision statement of no longer than 10 pages that includes a specific, personal research plan, a statement of research contributions (including mentoring faculty and graduate students), a teaching philosophy (including your experiences in increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in previous institutional environments, curriculum, and in supporting diverse students), and a plan for the development of externally funded strategic research projects and/or other programs appropriate to the field. Applications should also include a list of three referees who may be contacted later in the process with the candidate’s permission.

Applications should be compiled into a single PDF and emailed to Cathy Gates (cgates@trentu.ca). The closing date for applications is April 30, 2019.

For more information about Trent University applicants are invited to visit the Trent University Webpage (http://www.trentu.ca/) or contact Cathy Gates (cgates@trentu.ca).

Trent University is actively committed to creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive campus community and encourages applications from all qualified candidates. The University especially welcomes applications from the members of the four designated groups (Women, Indigenous Persons, members of a visible minority, and persons with disabilities). Recruitment will be guided by the Canada Research Chairs Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Practices, the Trent University Canada Research Chair Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan and by the University’s commitment to employment equity and diversity. Training and development activities related to unconscious bias, equity, diversity and inclusion for administrators and faculty involved in the recruitment and nomination processes for chair positions is mandatory.

All Candidates are invited to complete and submit a self-identification form along side their application. By identifying, CRC applicants allow Trent University, and the Canada Research Chair Program, to measure the levels of diversity and collect data for all groups to ensure any systemic barriers within our policies and processes can be identified. The collected forms, and their associated data, will be kept confidential, and only accessed on a need-to-know basis by members of the selection committee and, for nominees selected, by the Canada Research Chair Program Office.

Trent University recognizes the impacts that interruptions (e.g., parental leave, extended leave due to illness, etc.) can have on a person’s career and research achievements, and these leaves will be carefully considered when reviewing the candidate’s record. Candidates are encouraged to explain in their application how career interruptions may have impacted them.

Trent University offers accommodation for applicants with disabilities in its recruitment processes. If you require accommodation during the recruitment process or require an accessible version of a document/publication, please contact Cathy Gates (cgates@trentu.ca), Office of Research and Innovation.
