This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

The Identity Centers aim to promote an inclusive university climate by serving as an educational resource that prepares all students to succeed in an ever-changing society. The centers provide a supportive holistic learning environment for intercultural communication, constructive interaction and mutual understanding.
The values and goals of the Centers are to:
- To help create a greater sense of community contributing to the quality of life where students learn to be ethical and active San Diego State University students.
- To create and promote a sense of belonging that permeates throughout all aspects of the campus community (alumni, staff, faculty, students).
- To promote institutional values that foster a climate of inclusion.
- To foster the individual growth and unity of the SDSU community by advancing student learning through programs and experiences that that integrate self-awareness, multicultural and intercultural communication skills.
- Provide programs and services that support the academic mission of the University by enhancing the educational, personal, cultural, and social development of students.
The Identity Centers work collaboratively in building partnerships with SDSU departments and the surrounding community. Through participation in inter-identity relations activities and programs, students connect to the university and its programs, services, and opportunities. Students are encouraged and supported in pursuing academic competencies, personal growth, and leadership opportunities which will provide intersectional opportunities, an understanding and awareness of diverse human experiences, and civic responsibility. The Identity Centers foster and promote campus-wide programs, events relevant to student development and understanding in multicultural learning, faculty engagement, civic, and community service.
The Director of Identity Centers will supervise the professional staff who manage the existing Identity Centers. The incumbent is also responsible for the implementation of new Identity Centers as determined by the strategic priorities of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. In addition, the incumbent will work closely with academic units, Student Affairs departments, colleges, and campus constituencies in a liaison role, to develop strategic plans relevant to diversity and inclusion learning, and implement programs and special initiatives as assigned by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
The incumbent has a unique role with regard to enhancing the overall quality of life for all students on campus by focusing on student awareness, understanding, and participation in university-wide programming in support of the University’s and Division’s commitment to diversity and learning.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $6,250 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

- Master’s Degree in Ethnic Studies, Women’s Studies, LGBT Studies, or other relevant discipline.
- 5 years of progressive leadership promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education or a similarly complex organization.
- Experience managing large professional staff and/or student teams.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
- Bilingual or multilingual.
- Previous experience in higher education.
- Prior experience working in an identity based center.
- PhD, JD, EdD, MFA, or other terminal degree.
- Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create a safe working environment for systemically minoritized students, staff, and faculty.
- Experience participating in and helping to lead movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change.
- Knowledge of key social justice scholarship including (but not limited to) Critical Race Theory, Feminist Studies, Decolonization Studies, Ethnic Studies, Queer Theory, Anti-Oppression work, etc.
- Experience supporting students through high impact practices.
- Demonstrated track record of operating within an anti-oppression framework and using anti-deficit lenses.
- Able to understand and navigate a dynamic campus climate.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to facilitate difficult dialogues, effectively listen to all points of view, and build consensus on initiatives and issues.
- Competency in cross-cultural communication.
- Practices cultural humility in their interactions with others.
- Demonstrated success managing conflict and facilitating intergroup dialogue.
- Possesses leadership qualities such as: vision, pro-activeness, being a self-starter, positivity, assertiveness, and creativity.
- Demonstrates a collaborative leadership style that emphasizes openness to feedback, solutions-oriented problem solving skills, and participation from all constituencies.
- Effective public speaker.
- Knowledge of grant agencies including relationship development, submissions, administration, and report writing.
- Strong project management skills reflecting an ability to manage shifting priorities and handle numerous time-sensitive projections with multiple deadlines.
