One year appointment as an English Language Learner (ELL) Specialist in studio art/design in the First Year Experience. The new First Year Experience was designed in response to the rapid changes in art, design and technology, and the intersections between them that are occurring today. It has been crafted to provide a rigorous, integrated curriculum that reflects the diversity of our community and our learning pathways.

The First Year Experience of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for this full-time faculty position with a one-year contract, renewable for up to three years, in a non-tenure institution beginning August 2019.

Job Description:

The College seeks an outstanding teacher and accomplished artist/designer with expertise in working with non-native English speaking students, a strong conceptual and technical understanding of their specific field of practice, and an abiding interest in working with developing artists and designers from diverse backgrounds. The studio artist/designer/educator will teach eighteen credits per year (normally three courses per semester) at an art school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the importance of the fine arts. 

Specific courses taught will include the year-long, 6 credit Forum (most likely two sections, morning and afternoon on Mondays, 12 credits total), First Year Liberal Arts courses [possibly including Art Matters (Art History) and/or Critical Inquiry (Humanistic Studies), and/or Academic Writing Workshops for ELL students], or other FYE and upper level courses relevant to their field of practice. As a faculty member with ELL expertise, the successful candidate will participate in freshman and transfer student writing assessments along with the College’s ongoing efforts in designing and delivering faculty and staff ELL training.

The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of integrating practices, be knowledgeable of contemporary art/design issues and theory, and have the ability to combine theoretical, material, practical and social issues into studio pedagogy in a classroom engaging ELL students.

Requirements:

• Professional excellence as demonstrated by a strong portfolio of work and a record of professional activity in art/design practice and the field of TESOL
• Extensive ELL teaching experience in a studio classroom/academic setting
• Experience with designing outcome-based assessment
• Personal commitment to teaching on a college level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender and class and the intersections of these markers
• Knowledgeable about contemporary art issues and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces
• Centers teaching resources and content informed by broad worldviews and cultural approaches to theory and practice that reach beyond the heavily Westernized-canon
• Evidence of successful teaching a variety of art and design skill sets in both analog and digital media at the college level
• Capable of teaching in multiple levels and multiple departments of the undergraduate program
• Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims for diversity, equity and justice of the FYE department and the College.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional and departmental committee service and scheduled departmental and student activities
• Successful candidate will be required to complete employment and education verifications.

Highly Valued, but not required:

• MA TESOL and MFA degree in studio/design or MA in Art Education is strongly preferred
• 3 years of higher education teaching experience beyond graduate assistantships
• Coursework/experience in multi-cultural education
• Experience living outside of the United States
• Active member of national TESOL, MDTESOL, WATESOL, and/or other local affiliate
