Job TitleAmerican Sign Language Faculty FT (F02498)

Job Description SummaryMontgomery College is Maryland's premier community college. For 70 years, Montgomery College has been on the leading edge, and we intend to stay there. Montgomery College is a public, fully accredited, open admission institution. The College is dedicated to student success and is widely recognized for the quality and scope of its academic programs.

An expectation of academic quality and integrity has yielded highly regarded offerings and programs in the humanities, with the fast-growing American Sign Language (ASL) degree and certificate programs among them. Montgomery College has a long history of successfully preparing students for transfer to highly regarded four-year institutions and for careers working with the Deaf.

The ASL Programs (ASLP) at Montgomery College offer a rigorous course of study and a variety of engaging co-curricular activities and professional development opportunities for students interested in learning about and connecting with the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. The ASL programs are dedicated to helping students reach their personal and professional goals.

We are seeking a full-time ASL faculty member at the associate- or full-professor level beginning August 2020. The individual will have broad experience teaching and coordinating curriculum and offerings in the field and will be committed to taking the program to the next level, to the goals of the Montgomery College Academic Master Plan, and to the success of our students.

The successful candidate will appreciate teaching in a highly diverse, multi-cultural environment, and will welcome the opportunity to work with students of all backgrounds and needs. The faculty member will demonstrate a strong understanding of Second Language Acquisition and linguistics and will be able to teach all program offerings as well as to coordinate the ASL programs as they are poised for expansion. Faculty and coordinator duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work and broad familiarity with instructional technology as it relates to the teaching, learning, and assessment of ASL. Many of our courses use open educational resources (OERs) to yield cost savings for the students and the most current content for faculty. Incoming faculty will explore the development of OERs in the discipline.

Teaching assignments may include various schedules including days, evenings, and weekends. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools. Faculty may be assigned to any of these campuses and/or venues, although the program resides in Rockville. This position will be responsible for assisting the department chair in coordinating these offerings as well as all activities related to the ASL programs, such as open houses, ASL Honor Society induction ceremonies, creating partnerships with different organizations to secure volunteering opportunities for students, hosting Deaf Awareness Week activities, and maintaining an active role in the ASL Club, to name a few.

Montgomery College is a strong advocate of professional development and invests in its faculty. The College also offers an outstanding benefits package. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit.

Assignment begins spring or fall 2020.
