JOSEPH WHARTON, FOUNDER
In 1881, American entrepreneur and industrialist Joseph Wharton established the world’s first collegiate school of business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Duties

The Penn Wharton Budget Model informs policy discussions by supporting the production of data-driven research on issues at the intersection of business and public policy. Toward this end, PWBM is building a pioneering massive data store to hold information about business, government, and society. This data store powers USAFacts.org, a website started by Steve Ballmer, as well as research by PWBM and Wharton faculty. PWBM is seeking a Research Associate/Data Analyst to assist with building and maintaining the data store. Job responsibilities include writing code to automate data collection and cleaning, performing statistical and econometric analyses, and providing research-related technical programming support. The ability to use statistical and programming tools, and self-motivation are essential in performing these functions. An understanding of finance or economics is a plus.

Please note that this is a two-year position, contingent upon funding. PWBM’s Research Associate program is modeled on similar programs at the Federal Reserve and NBER. But this role will have a stronger focus on software development. We anticipate that the successful candidate, after two years with PWBM, will seek to go on to graduate programs in economics, applied mathematics, statistics, finance or related disciplines, or to find work as a quantitative analyst in the financial industry.

Qualifications

A bachelor s degree, preferably in Economics, Statistics, Finance, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline; and a minimum of 2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. In addition, the following credentials are important:

- Previous experience serving as a research assistant/data analyst or pursing independent research as an undergraduate.
- Proficiency with at least one programming language, such as Python, Matlab, Stata, C#, and/or R.
- Ability to pull data from existing sources, such as Bloomberg or FRED.
- Interest in related fields, including public policy, economics and, finance.
