Academic & Research IT Support Engineer Lead

DescriptionJob Purpose: Provide advanced and innovative research IT leadership and support,typically in an academic or research unit. Hold the role of lead subject matterexpert regarding delivery of IT services in support of research andinstruction. Position focuses on maximizing the delivery of high-valueconsultative services to faculty and their research groups.

 Major Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-level expertise, advice and technology leadership; defines and implements the vision and strategy for IT across multiple research groups and unit management.
  • Design and deliver unit level technical architecture including integration with other systems and budget management; implement and evaluate functional and technical IT system requirements and specifications for unit level services and highly complex projects.
  • Plan and analyze unit level technology investments; identify common needs among research groups and develop associated solutions, focusing on the collaborative use of resources where possible.
  • Responsible for the data management and security operation for an entire unit; design implement disaster recovery and data integrity, to include contingency planning, and testing disaster recovery scenarios. Consult and communicate security and data management practices to unit management.
  • Provide advanced system administration of computational and data resources, technical equipment, and other networked systems for large research groups and unit level needs, including defining performance and reliability objectives.
  • Coordinate and define responsibilities for management of and operational support of a large and diverse set of cyber-infrastructure resources (including desktops, workstations, data acquisition systems, other computational and data resources) to meet unit level IT needs.
  • Design and implement functionality to integrate campus level systems with unit level requirements; may involve leveraging Application Program Interface (API) and web services to automate data workflows.
  • Provide consultative support to faculty on any and all technology relevant to their work (may include HPC and research computation environments, collaboration tools such as videoconferencing, communication technologies including web and social media, and highly advanced scientific applications).
  • Advise and understand the diverse needs of the unit stakeholders and define new solutions and technology applications to serve them.

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Work Experience: Six to eight years job related experience

  • Skills: This position requires advanced knowledge and skill in the installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software at all layers; requires a deep understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; excellent skills in problem solving, decision making, customer service, system documentation and communications; expertise with enterprise systems, networking, security and overall IT architecture including systems management; deep understanding of how to properly secure research workload along with NIST 800-171 I DFARS 7012 compliance issues; strong knowledge of one or more programming language, scientific simulation methods and operational software development methodology preferred.

  • Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field
  • Preferred Work Experience: Enterprise virtualization technology such as OpenStack, VMWare, and/or AzureStack.  Experience with AWS, Azure and/or Google Cloud a plus.  Strong linux skills.  Experience with configuration management and orchestration tools such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible or SALT.  Working knowledge of Python or other programming languages.  Workload queueing/resource management software such as PBS Pro, Torque or HTCondor.
