Overview

Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, is seeking an exchange visitor to join our French language house as a Language Lab Instructor for the 2019-2020 academic year. The language lab instructor provides Macalester students with supplemental classroom language instruction. In addition, the language lab instructor lives in the associated language house and provides students with a resource for cultural study, conversation practice and research.

Responsibilities
  • Provides supplemental classroom instruction in the language of their expertise (in conjunction with Macalester language faculty & adhering to all established college academic standards and procedures).
  • Resides in and manages the language house the entire duration of the contract (August 26, 2019 – May 17, 2020).
  • Acts as a resource in the language house by providing advanced conversation practice, cultural study, and tutoring as needed.
  • Leads or assists residents of the language house with organizing and promoting cultural activities.
  • Leads or assists residents of the language house with producing publications (academic documents, newsletters, posters, etc.).
  • Occasionally replaces faculty members when ill or out of town for professional conferences.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree required
  • Language instruction or linguistics-related field required
  • Advanced knowledge or native level proficiency in the house language (verbal and written)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Background in languages and culture
  • Proficient in English verbal and writing skills
  • Prior experience teaching at the college level preferred

Benefits

Macalester employees enjoy a fantastic benefits package and working environment that is second to none. In addition to the salary, language lab instructors receive a private room in the language house from August 26, 2019 – May 17, 2020. Lodging includes utility expenses such as electricity, gas, water and Wi-Fi connection. The position also includes coverage under Macalester’s health insurance plan. For first-year language lab instructors, approximately $181.43 will be deducted from each month’s salary to constitute the employee contribution to the health plan.
