Job Purpose: Supervise operations of an instructional or research laboratory. Activities include instruction in lab procedures and safety, development of lab procedures and processes, conducting experiments, budgeting and purchasing, equipment and inventory maintenance and maintaining records. Responsible for setting employee goals, assessing performance and providing feedback and making pay recommendations.   Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction to lab users on proper use of lab equipment, lab safety, protocols and procedures related to conducting experiments.
  • Develop and on approval administer laboratory budget; oversee purchase supplies and equipment and maintain related records.
  • Supervise operations of laboratory facility in safe, clean and organized manner.
  • Oversee scheduling of lab usage.
  • Develop and implement laboratory policy and procedures; incorporate best practices as appropriate.
  • Oversee calibration and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Plan and direct work of subordinate staff and assess performance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Basic Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in scientific field.
  • Work Experience: Six to seven years job related experience
  • Certifications: N/A
  • Skills: This job requires working knowledge of instructional or research laboratory operation to include equipment calibration and maintenance, laboratory processes and procedures and lab safety rules and practices. Skills in communication, customer service, supervision and instruction are required as is the use of specialty and general computer applications.

 

  Qualifications   Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in scientific field.

  • Preferred Skills:
  • Course work in biology, physiology or veterinary technology preferred. 
  • GLP and/or preclinical research experience highly preferred. 
  • Must have prior demonstrated successful experience managing a team and working with other teams to successfully solve complex problems.
  • Instituting, developing, refining mentorship and training of all new-hires and current technical staff.
  • Some hands on animal care is required - handling, restraining, observing and treating a variety of species.  Anesthetizing and preparing animals for surgical procedures. 
  •    Job Knowledge:
    • Experience with Management in veterinary medicine required.
      Good verbal and written communication.  Good interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
    • Ability to effectively present information to members of the organization.
    • Ability to collaborate on the design, writing and execution of experimental protocols and collection of data.
    • Proficient with common Office software.
    Additional Information: Manager, Preclinical Operations is responsible for vivarium and operating room activities and is intimately involved in the facilitation and coordination of veterinary husbandry, nursing, anesthesia and surgical support to a variety of species in a research facility.   Responsible for on time, efficient and accurate delivery of high quality research and training requirements per protocol.   Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: academic and/or research faculty members, staff and students, laboratory staff, vendor/suppliers. This position typically will advise and counsel: lab users, students and technicians, student assistants. This position will supervise: laboratory technical staff.
