Data Wrangler (Research Instructor)

The Data Scienceto Patient Value (D2V, cud2v.org) Program is a multidisciplinary researchinitiative that focuses on Big Data methods, their applications to medicine andhealth care delivery, and ultimately, the achievement of high value healthpatient-centered health care. D2V accomplishes this by creating an environmentof collaboration and innovation in which experts in data science, healthcaredelivery, and health services research work together to tackle importantproblems. D2V places a high priority on translation and dissemination, ensuringthe 'products', be they analytic methods or care pathways, have maximal impact.


This position isfor a Data Wrangler in the Informatics core of D2V. The mission of theInformatics core is to create and sustain access to high-value data assets thatare discoverable, accessible, and reliable, by providing informatics expertiseand tools to facilitate research in data sciences and discovery. The core willleverage the substantial existing institutional investments in Health DataCompass’ (HDC,http://www.ucdenver.edu/about/departments/healthdatacompass/Pages/default.aspx)

HIPAA-compliant data center, common resources, data-sharing policies, procedures and regulatory framework. Unlike HDC, D2V will implement novel data architectures and informatics methods to remain on the "bleeding edge" of Big Data management. The D2V Informatics Core will be a collaborative group that has unique expertise in these areas, but which also builds strong bridges to other informatics groups on campus in support of D2V projects.

The Data Wranglerwill be expected to work independently and in collaboration with other membersof D2V. They will provide professional and scientifically rigorous datawrangling expertise to D2V initiatives, Informatics core initiatives, and D2Vscientific projects. This may include data acquisition, processing workflows,tool development, data management and curation, data discovery, dataintegration and person level linkages, federated data sharing technologies, anddata/metadata repositories. The Data Wrangler will also be expected to developsolutions to challenges that arise for D2V cores and projects and disseminateresults to a variety of audiences with varying levels of data informaticsexpertise.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
The Data Wrangler will work both independently and in collaboration withother D2V team members. Assigned work will be varied by project needs. Thisposition will be a key interface between the University’s data assets andinvestigators who wish to use these assets. We also seek someone who cancontribute to developing innovative, reusable, and scalable processes fordecreasing the barriers to data access, data understandability, and data use,and to support reproducible and open science, especially the promotion ofhealth data standards and open health data access methods such as HL7 FHIR. Theposition will be tasked with developing and testing new workflows and tools forD2V initiatives, performing rapid-cycle testing of proposed solutions, orconsulting with other informatics teams to solve problems for specificprojects.

QualificationsApplicants forthis position should a) be able to manage several assignments/projects at once, b) thrive in a varied work environment, c) enjoy brainstorming and thinking creatively to develop solutions to complexproblems. 

  • The positionrequires formal training and experience in informatics and data management. AnMS or PhD in Informatics, Information Technology, Computer Science, DataScience, or a related area is required. At least 2 years of previous experienceor training as an data wrangler, informatics specialist, or equivalent
  • Strong skills with relational databases, datamanagement in SQL or equivalent
  • Strong skillswith common ETL tools and processes, relational databases, and software development environments, especiallyopen source tools
  • Experiencewith data modeling and curation
  • Experience with data discovery, management and integration
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies and distributed computing, Google Cloud PlatformStorage, Compute, Cloud SQL, BigQuery
  • Experiencewith web technologies and services, JavaScript, and REST APIs
  • Experience with version controland techniques for reproducibility, such as GitHub, GitLab, Jupyter/iPython, R packages
  • Strongprogramming skills with R, Python, or both
  • Experience with medical ontologies, vocabularies, terminologies (e.g.,ICD, SNOMED, LOINC)
  • Workexperience after training in an academic research environment, or equivalentcombination of education, training, and experience that provides the individual with therequired knowledge, skills and abilities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experiencewith Epic data warehouses- Caboodle, Clarity
  • Experiencewith Java
  • Experiencewith OMOP common data model, tools, and OHDSIcommunity
  • Experiencewith record linkage
  • Experiencewith protected data, HIPAA
  • Familiarityor interest in linked data, RDF, semantic web
  • Evidenceof involvement in HL7 or other data communities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ANDABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of basic statistical principles and/or statistical process control methods.
  • Previous experience with data acquisition, data profiling, data syntactic and semanticharmonization from source format into a targetformat.
  • Experience with data qualityassessments and routines, attention to detailfor detecting and assessingroot causes of data anomalies.
  • Prior experience with non-technical customerto translate theirneeds into actionable data wrangling tasks.
  • Abilityto analyze and creatively solve complex problems.
  • Excellent writtenand verbal communication skills and the ability to disseminate resultsto a wide variety of audiences, including contributing to poster, papersand other publications.
  • Good organizational skills across multipleprojects and the ability to manage one’s ownworkload, self-directed.
  • A positiveattitude and the ability to work with a varietyof investigators and colleagues.
  • Ability to contribute to the growthand development of the D2V Informatics core and D2V overall
