NATURE OF WORK

The Department of Epidemiology of the Colorado School of Public Healthhas an opening for one or more faculty positions in the tenure track at theAssistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. The Department’s goal is to builda multi-disciplinary faculty engaged in cutting edge epidemiological and publichealth research and training. We are particularly interested in candidates witha research track record in social epidemiology or the epidemiology of mental healthor behavioral health disorders.

The Colorado School of Public Health was established in 2008 as acollaborative school that builds on the collective strengths of the Universityof Colorado, Colorado State University, and the University of NorthernColorado. It is the only accredited school of public health in the RockyMountain region. In 2013, the Colorado SPH ranked 11th in total researchfunding among state-supported schools of public health, and is home to CDC,HRSA, and NIOSH-funded research and training centers. With over 127 primaryfaculty on the three collaborative campuses, there are over 300 students inprograms leading to the MPH, MS, PhD, and DrPH degrees. Across the campuses,the Department of Epidemiology has 29 regular faculty members with manyadditional secondary or adjunct appointments in multiple schools and communityfacilities.

The new faculty position(s) would be located in the Department ofEpidemiology located on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus,which is a $4 billion state-of-the-art academic medical complex, includingclinical, research, and teaching facilities that support the Schools of PublicHealth, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, and the Graduate School. TheAnschutz Medical Campus includes over 5 million square feet of research,educational and clinical space on 227 acres. Several centers, including the Universityof Colorado Comprehensive Cancer Center, Life-course Epidemiology of Adiposityand Diabetes (LEAD) Center, Center for Global Health, National Mental HealthInnovation Center, Latino Research and Policy Center, Centers for AmericanIndian and Alaska Native Health, Center for Work, Health and Environment, andthe Rocky Mountain Prevention Research Center provide exceptionally richresearch opportunities for faculty.

The Department ofEpidemiology seeks to hire a faculty member in the tenure track. Candidatesmust demonstrate expertise in teaching and advancing a specific research agendaaddressing one or more aspect of public health.  Expectations include a mixture of teaching andmentoring, conducting funded research, and engaging in professional service.

EXPECTATIONS


The full-time tenure-track or tenure-eligible position will be involvedwith research, educational and service activities. Appointees will be expectedto support, contribute, and provide leadership in trans-disciplinarycollaborations campus-wide, in both research and teaching. Collaborations withother institutions nationally and internationally are also strongly encouraged. 

  • We seek a candidate with training and expertise in epidemiology. We areparticularly interested in the areas of social epidemiology or the epidemiologyof mental health or behavioral health disorders.
  • All areas of epidemiology will be considered if a strong research andteaching mission is articulated.
  • The primary responsibilities of this position are to:
    • establish and sustain a productive research portfolio through independentexternal funding
    • provide outstanding educational leadership at the graduate level in theclassroom and in mentoring students and contributing towards the growth ofeducational programs.
    • provide institutional and professional leadership and service,particularly with regard to interdisciplinary scholarship, student success, anddiversity.
  • This position requires a rigorous program of independent research alongwith teaching at the graduate level.

The incumbent will report toJill Norris, MPH, PhD, Chair of the Department of Epidemiology.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED 

None at time of hire; maysupervise student workers, postdoctoral fellows and/or junior faculty as careerdevelops.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORKPERFORMED 

  • Teach graduate-level courses inpublic health and epidemiology
  • Conduct research
  • Obtain extramural support forresearch and public health practice
  • Publish in peer reviewedjournals
  • Mentor Masters and Doctoral students.
  • Provide academic leadership andservice to the Department, School, University and profession.


Qualifications

REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD, ScD, orDrPH in epidemiology or related disciplines, or an MD or DO with additionaltraining in epidemiology.
  • An establishedindependent extramurally funded program of research (for the Associate or Full Professorranks) or demonstrated potential to establish an independent extramurallyfunded program of research (for the Assistant Professor rank).
  • An establishedrecord of teaching excellence (for the Associate or Full Professor ranks) ordemonstrated potential for teaching excellence (for the Assistant Professorrank).

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant faculty level experience (or equivalent) in epidemiologicresearch, and expertise and interest in both self-initiated and collaborativeresearch. 
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a research focusthat is complementary to existing research strengths of Departmental, School, andUniversity programs in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, and genetics.
  • Experience with a variety of teaching methods and/orcurricular perspectives, including teaching students from different backgroundswith diverse life experiences and learning styles.
