Clinical Research Administration has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Contract Specialist position.


Jobs in this career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Position Emphasis:

This is a Clinical Research Specialist position that will be assigned to review and negotiate sponsored research agreements. The individual will also provide general assistance in other areas as required and will be assigned to various office tasks as work volume requires. The individual will report to the Clinical Research Administration Director and will be assigned to assist that position and other professionals in the office.

Examples of Work Performed:

Contract negotiation
  • Serve as a Clinical Research Contracts Specialist for the Clinical Research Administration Office located on the Anschutz Medical campus
  • Review and Negotiate terms and conditions of industry sponsored clinical trial contracts and related agreements under the supervision of a Lead Clinical Research Contracts Associate
  • Appropriately identify and escalate issues to a Lead Clinical Research Contracts Associate
  • Review and negotiate amendments to terms and conditions after original contract is executed
  • Will need to determine if the terms and conditions meet Board of Regents, University, local, state, or federal policies. If the terms do not meet policies, procedures, and regulations, how do I appropriately detail situation and propose possible solutions to review with Lead Clinical Research Contracts Associate
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with appropriate faculty and staff to ensure comprehension of final set of terms and conditions
Process Development
  • Provide input to the Senior Clinical Research Contracts Manager regarding development of practices and procedures in areas in need of development/improvement
  • Help identify, discuss, and solve workflow issues common to the clinical research contracts process
Special Projects
  • Assistance is provided by attending meetings, researching issues, and drafting reports
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by the Senior Clinical Research Contracts Manager or the Director of Clinical Research Administration
Other
  • Provide coverage of team members during absence
  • Willingness to help find answers to questions that are outside area of expertise
  • Other duties as assigned

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, contract management, communication, healthcare administration, business administration, business, or a directly related field from an accredited institution
  • 1 year of professional level experience with contract management and negotiations, editing legal documents, or similar field of experience
  • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education grants and contracts administration
  • Experience with industry-sponsored clinical research contracts.

  • Outstanding customer service skills

  • Contract expertise in formation, negotiation, administration and/or management or experience
  • OMB Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200, 2 CFR 220, 2 CFR 215), OMB A-133, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and other applicable Federal and State laws and regulations relating to research administration at an educational institution
  • Strong communication skills – written and oral
  • Excellent analytical skills including the ability to apply basic math skills
  • Exceptional customer service skills; team-oriented
  • Organizational and time management
  • Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word and Outlook 
  • Ability to edit documents based on policy and procedure
  • Ability to identify issues and escalate for discussion
  • Ability to work in a high volume office with deadlines
  • Ability to understand and interpret applicable laws, policies, regulations, rules, guidelines, etc.
  • Ability to prepare and present analysis of issues and translate complex information into easily comprehensible terms
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external partners
