Nature of Work
The Clinical Laboratory Animal Veterinary Intern providesveterinary care for the CU Denver animal care and use program through theOffice of Laboratory Animal Resources. The Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR) is the administrativearm of the CU Denver animal care and use program with specific responsibilityfor regulatory requirements, veterinary oversight of animal care, provision fortraining needs in appropriate animal care and use, IACUC support, and theorganizational point of contact for extra-mural animal related interactions(AAALAC, USDA, OLAW, public, etc.). The individual serving in this positionassists in providing veterinary care and assuring regulatory compliance for theuse of animals in biomedical research at CU Denver.
Supervision Received
The intern will reportdirectly to a senior clinical veterinarian, board certified in laboratoryanimal medicine. In addition, the intern will be supervised by other veterinarians,who are generally board certified in laboratory animal medicine as well. Theintern’s research project will also be supervised by one of the veterinarians.

The Veterinary Intern’sresponsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Knowledge ofclinical operations and procedures.
- Knowledge ofanimal husbandry requirements, methods, and techniques.
- Ability toprovide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in area ofexpertise.
- Knowledge ofanimal surgical techniques.
- Ability to assessand treat medical conditions in a wide variety of animals.
- Ability to maintain safety andinfection control standards.
- Ability toestablish and maintain effective collaborations and working relationships witha variety of persons, internal and external to the department and institution.
- Leadership skillsfor effective planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation.
- Ability to workeffectively under general direction or guidelines with minimal supervision
- Ability tocommunicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- D.V.M. (orequivalent) from an AVMA – Accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.
- License topractice in at least one state within the U.S.
- Previous trainingand /or experience in laboratory animal medicine.
