The Department of Pediatrics, Section of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, has an opening for a full-time (1.0FTE/1.0cFTE) Instructor/Advanced Practice Provider (APP) position.

Job Summary

This full-time (1.0FTE/1.0cFTE) Instructor/Advanced Practice Provider position will work collaboratively on a team of four Advanced Practice Providers and will become integral to the growth of our nationally recognized pediatric pulmonary inpatient service, through providing care to a complex pediatric pulmonary population. This position will work with an experienced group of pediatric pulmonary providers and nurses to provide acute, complex, evidence based specialty care. This position will require day and every fourth night in-house coverage (to be shared across the four APPs) on the pulmonary inpatient and NICU consultation services at Children's Hospital Colorado. Full time is considered approximately fifteen (15), twelve (12) hour shifts per month on days, nights, weekends and some holidays.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) will provide care to a complex pediatric population with airway and lung conditions including asthma, trach/mechanical ventilation, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, neuromuscular disease, and other complex pulmonary conditions. The NP/PA will work independently within the multidisciplinary team to provide quality inpatient care, disease management, and coordination of discharge planning with discharge planners, nurses, and other medical personnel. Major responsibilities include but are not limited to autonomy in the following areas: clinical practice, consult service, education, fiscal responsibility, program and professional development.

Examples of Work Performed

- Utilize Acute Care Models to facilitate and perform direct patient care in an inpatient setting

- Population based acute/chronic care focused on the admission, ongoing management, and discharge of pediatric pulmonary patients in the inpatient setting ensuring seamless approach to plan of care

- Inpatient pulmonary service including: daily assessment, documentation, and participation on team rounds on 5-10 patients per day; the team consists of residents, APPs, pulmonary fellow(s), and attending pulmonologist

- Provide ongoing day and night coverage as well as weekends as needed

- Perform NICU consult service for approximately 5-10 NICU patients with pulmonary problems with an attending pulmonologist; APP will be responsible for documentation of these visits and billing is shared

- Provide continuity of care for medically complex patients

- Facilitate safe, patient-centered, and equitable care by using evidence-based practice and implementing clinical care pathways

- Facilitate efficient and timely care through an understanding of the hospital system

- Facilitate tracking of outcomes through focused efforts supporting quality patient care and system processes

- Participate in multi-disciplinary care including team meetings and patient care conferences

- Prepare patients and families for discharge from the hospital with care plans individualized to the specific respiratory disorder and patient condition

- Advocate for empowerment of patients and families as equal partners in the health care team by serving as a resource/expert within an interdisciplinary team 

- Demonstrate an ongoing commitment of self-assessment and growth as well as provision of support and encouragement for the growth of peers and team members

- Actively participate in the development of hospital programs related to the care of children with respiratory conditions

- Participate as an active team member to improve access to care

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements        

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing or equivalent education as a Physician's Assistant

- Certified Nurse Practitioner, Certified Physician Assistant, or other relevant/comparable advanced certification

- Licensed or ability to obtain State of Colorado Nursing license or State of Colorado Physician Assistant License

- Acute Care Certification

*If Acute Care Certification is not already possessed, you will need to enroll in an AC program within 2 years and complete the program within 5 years of start date.

Conditions of Employment     

- Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado

- Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check

- Must be able to work a flexible schedule for on-call hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

- Must be licensed or able to obtain licensure in the State of Colorado

Competencies - Knowledge, Skills, Abilities   

- Knowledge and ability to apply clinical skills in an Advanced Practice Provider/Physician Assistant role

- Knowledge of academic medical institutions

- Strong interpersonal written and verbal communication skills

- Commitment to Patient Safety, Quality Care, Communication, and Customer Service

- Ability to exercise independent decision-making related to clinical management of patient population, as well as, provide comprehensive case management for a group of primary patients

- Ability to exercise leadership in managing plan of care including current and ongoing needs for patients

- Strong pediatric diagnostics skills

 Preferred Qualifications        

- Prior pediatric care experience

- Prior pediatric pulmonary experience

- Prescriptive authority or eligible for certification

- Current registration as an Advanced Practice Provider in the State of Colorado

- Bilingual language abilities (in both Spanish and English)

- Prior inpatient experience
