Full-Time Close All Job SummaryThe Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking an Associate Scientist to join the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes group of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory/Chemical Sciences Division (ESRL/CSD). Within this group, the Associate Scientist will work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to design and implement data acquisition, control and communication software for a variety of custom research instruments that are used for laboratory and field atmospheric research, assist in instrument hardware development, and participate in deployment of instruments during field measurement operations. The ACCP group builds and adapts instruments that we fly on airborne platforms ranging from small balloons and UAVs (drones) to large (e.g. NASA DC-8) and high-altitude (e.g. NASA WB-57 and Global Hawk) aircraft to make aerosol and gas-phase composition measurements for studying atmospheric processes related to climate and air quality.
We seek an individual with experience in data acquisition and control programming utilizing microprocessors and/or industrial controllers. A Bachelor’s Degree or higher is required, preferably in an engineering field, computer science, physics, atmospheric science or similar, and the ideal candidate would have experience with electronics and/or scientific instrumentation, be able to communicate effectively, and work independently as well as collaboratively within a group.

In the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory, researchers build instruments to make precise measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to better understand how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate – and therefore people.

- Work closely with a team of federal and CIRES scientists to develop and implement data acquisition, instrument control and communication software
- Assist in design and construction of custom research instruments
- Support maintenance of existing instruments
- Support deployment of instrumentation during field missions (some travel required)
This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will physically work in the David Skaggs Research Center (DSRC) at 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO, 80305. Applicant must be able to pass the federal security check to access the DSRC which is a Federal Laboratory facility. - Experience with programming (C, C++, or similar)
