The Georgetown University Library is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader for the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. Renovated and expanded in 2014, the Booth Center includes a classroom dedicated to teaching with special collections; a reading room for researchers; a separate reception area; exhibition spaces; an environmentally-controlled, secure shelving area and vault; and collaborative workspace for faculty, staff and students.

The Director provides leadership, vision, and management for a staff of ten and an outstanding array of rare books, manuscripts, archives, and art collections held by the Georgetown University Library. Special Collections encompasses more than 120,000 rare book volumes, over 800 manuscript collections, approximately 7,000 linear feet of University Archives records, and the University Art Collection of 15,000 prints and 500 paintings.

She or he has responsibilities that include: developing and stewarding the University Library's unique and valuable scholarly resources; reaching out to faculty, students, and others to promote the use of Special Collections; ensuring high-quality research and instruction services from Special Collections staff; working with the Dean of the Library to build donor interest and participation; administering all operations of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections and working collaboratively with other units across the Library .

The Director of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections has a significant role in advancing Georgetown's initiatives relating to Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation.

Reporting to the Deputy University Librarian, the Director of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections represents the Library to a diverse community of faculty, students, staff, administrators, researchers, and professional organizations.

The Director directly supervises professional staff heading four units: Rare Books, Manuscripts, University Archives, and the University Art Collection, with oversight for a total of 10 FTE. Additional responsibilities include oversight of term positions and independent contractors as needed for special projects as well as student assistants.

Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in a relevant academic field required - preference for a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution plus a second advanced degree in a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years successful management, supervisory, and budget experience in increasingly responsible positions within special collections, preferably in an academic or research library
  • Deep understanding of the nature of special collections and their connection to the University's mission
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: rare books, manuscripts, art, archives, born digital materials, building digital collections
  • Proven success in promoting the use of special collections for research, teaching, and learning through diverse outreach initiatives
  • Demonstrated success in collaborations across the library
  • Demonstrated planning, decision making, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the uses of technology to enhance the reach and impact of special collections
  • Superior communication skills

Preferred qualifications
  • Proven success in donor relations, fundraising, and/or obtaining grants
  • Reading knowledge of at least one modern or classical foreign language
  • Record of substantial accomplishment in publication, teaching, presentations and/or participation in professional organizations
