BASIC FUNCTION:

The Assistant Director of Residential Life reports to the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life, and is responsible for the development, implementation, and leadership of a comprehensive residential life program, which supports a vibrant student living/learning environment and enhances student growth and development.  The Assistant Director supervises Resident Assistants (24), and creates and implements programs, which serve the educational, social, and cultural interests of students.  The Assistant Director also assists with the overall management of the Residential Life operations.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee Residence Education program and provide intentional and integrated approach in program offerings and services that support and advance co-curricular and extra-curricular engagement in a small residential living community.
  • Provide leadership and supervision for 24 Resident Assistants and general oversight of the residential buildings, comprising approximately 1230 beds.
  • Recruit, select, train, and evaluate Resident Assistants including weekly meetings with student staff both individually and collectively.
  • Create and oversee duty schedule for Resident Assistants.
  • Create and implement an ongoing Resident Assistant education and development program.
  • Provide outreach to students at risk or in need, establishing meaningful connections in and out of the office.
  • Work with RAs and other student leaders to develop living areas with special interests or needs;
  • Collaborate with campus partners to provide educational and community development programming in the residence halls.
  • Provide excellent customer service by responding to student and parent concerns, reporting and troubleshooting facilities issues, in conjunction with the rest of the Residential Life staff and Facilities
  • Advise students and Resident Assistants in resolving student conflicts regarding residential life matter as needed on an ongoing basis.
  • Serve as a member of the On‐Call Dean staff during the academic year (approximately 3 weeks per semester).
  • Serve as a member of the College’s Incident Management/Operations Team.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of accurate, timely, and accessible department publications and website.
  • Collaborate and co-sponsor programs with other departments and student organizations.
  • Represent the DOS office to students, parents, CMC staff and faculty, and prospective students.
  • Represent the department by serving on college wide committees.
  • Assist with student crisis intervention and communicate with other CMC and DOS staff regarding student issues and individual student concerns.
  • Develop, interpret, and enforce College policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Assists the Assistant Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life with the following:

 

  • Develop and assess ongoing strategic plan for residential life.
  • Assist with the formation and implementation of a residential curriculum that includes assessment of student learning.
  • Assist with all aspects of the housing assignment process including: returning student room draw, first year, transfer, and readmitted student assignments, housing exchange program with other Claremont Colleges, room change requests, and overflow housing triage.
  • Assist with coordination and management of the transition and summer housing processes including applications, room assignments, storage, and programming.
  • Assist with oversight and management of housing operations including room draw/lottery process, placement, hall openings and closings, room inventory system, and working closely with the College’s facilities services operation.
  • Assist with housing operations including new student assignments, room draw process, and dorm damage.
  • Oversee department publications, website and other communications.
  • Serve as a member of standing committees including, but not limited to, the Claremont Colleges Residential Deans Committee and the Emergency Incident Management Team, which requires this position to respond to campus during emergency situations impacting residence halls.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

 

EDUCATION: 

Master’s degree in Student Affairs/Higher Education or related field required.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

3-5 years of administrative experience in an active, service oriented, student centered, diverse, professional office environment; higher education administrative experience required.

Preferred experience working within a small, residential college environment. Event planning and management, programming, and advising experience. Experience with risk management within the collegiate environment. Experience successfully hiring, managing and leading student workers.

 

LICENSES: 

Valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Light (up to 20 lbs.)

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:  Individual must possess knowledge, skills, and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of knowledge skills and abilities.

 

Must have superior interpersonal skills, and the ability to use tact, patience, and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters. 

Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal direction.  

Individual must have proven ability to prioritize concerns and workload, and respond appropriately to others in a timely manner using sound judgment.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, customer service and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees. 

Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of responsibilities and duties.

Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software, Use assigned technology to achieve goals and maintaining confidentiality.

 

OTHER:

 

HOURS:  

The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm plus evening and weekend event coverage.  Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department.

 

CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS: 

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.  On-campus, two-bedroom apartment provided.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: 

The Assistant Director supervises Resident Assistants.
