Job Description:

The Mills College Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a full-time Assistant Adjunct Professor in Computer Science. The successful candidate must provide evidence of high-quality teaching of computer science to undergraduates. Available courses are:

• CS 63: Introduction to Computer Science (Java 1)
• CS 64: Computer Concepts and Intermediate Programming (Java 2)
• CS 111: Computer Architecture
• CS 114/214: Programming Languages
• DATA 150: Introduction to Data Analysis

All courses will be taught one time during the 2019-2020 academic year, with the exception of CS 63, which typically has two sections in the fall and one in the spring. There is also the possibility of teaching a Special Topics course in an area chosen by the candidate. Descriptions of the courses can be found on the Computer Science and Data Science catalog pages. We can provide curricula for all of the courses except for DATA 150, or the candidate can provide their own. The position requires teaching 4 sections over the academic year (generally 2 sections/semester) and performing substantial service to the Department or College.

This is a one academic year contract position to begin in August 2019 with an expected salary of $60,000 and the possibility of renewal.

Mills has a distinguished record in computer science education. Between 1960 and 1974, the College progressed from a single course in computing with one professor and one student to a full-fledged computer science major. Mills was the first women's college and one of the first liberal arts colleges to offer an undergraduate degree in computer science and to establish a Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The Department offers a unique graduate degree in Interdisciplinary Computer Science for students with undergraduate degrees in other fields that they wish to combine with computer science. Mills graduates have been hired by Apple, Google, Salesforce, Splunk, Twitter, and other top companies; joined non-profit organizations, such as AnitaB.org, Mission Bit, and Mozilla; and been admitted to PhD programs at CMU, MIT, UC Berkeley, UCSD, University of Virginia, and University of Washington.

Requirements:

Candidates must:

• have been instructors of computer science classes at 2- or 4-year colleges or universities
• be comfortable working with students of diverse ethnicities, gender identities, and backgrounds
• have a degree in Computer Science or a closely related field

The ideal candidate would have:

• experience teaching the courses listed above, especially introductory major courses
• a history of teaching, mentoring, or otherwise encouraging individuals from groups underrepresented in computing

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is $60,000.00 per year, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period.
