Location: Gambier, OH

Kenyon College, a national liberal arts college an hour northeast of Columbus, Ohio, seeks an experienced and versatile development writer to join a talented creative team. The Development Writer / Advancement Communications Director (DW/ACD) draws on an exceptional writing ability to make the case for Kenyon to a varied and sophisticated audience, inspiring engagement and investment from a worldwide family of alumni, parents and friends.

The DW/ACD oversees Kenyon’s ecosystem of advancement communications and works closely with colleagues to ensure strategic integrity across programs and platforms. In fall 2018, Kenyon entered the public phase of a $300 million campaign, and the DW/ACD is the lead writer for an array of print and digital communications — leadership gift proposals, campaign collateral, scripts and multimedia presentations, donor recognition stories, among others. The DW/ACD collaborates with the annual giving, engagement and marketing teams on wider appeals that honor Kenyon’s culture and inspire action.

The communications and advancement teams benefit from a dynamic partnership in their work to strengthen lifelong ties with the College, and the DW/ACD reports to both the Vice President for Communications and the Vice President for Advancement. Engaging alumni and families is a crucial part of the College’s strategic communications program, which includes branding and marketing, traditional and social media, internal communications, and digital and print publications such as Kenyon.edu and the award-winning Alumni Bulletin magazine.

    Working at Kenyon College

Living and Learning in the Kenyon Community and the Surrounding Area

Excellence. Engagement. Community. This is what Kenyon values. There is a distinctive brand of community that is Kenyon's. We believe that individuals are not limited to who they are on paper, where they have been, or what they look like.

We believe that this place, Kenyon College, is a beautiful place in which one can build a beautiful life. And when someone's interests and strengths match the opportunities that this place has to offer, fulfillment happens.

Our faculty and staff have come here from all over the country-indeed, from all over the world, and from all kinds of backgrounds. They stay and live a life some never expected to live. Former urbanites raise sheep and practice carpentry when they are not engaged in academics. Faculty and staff walk their dogs around campus. For a change of pace, some will make the 50-minute drive to Columbus for some great dining, arts and cultural events, or shopping.

Kenyon is the kind of place where living the life of the mind matters. Discourse happens every day, and students, faculty, and staff have opportunities to learn to practice it with civility. It is the kind of place where people come together to support someone in a crisis large or small. It is collaborative more than competitive. If you want a place where individuals care deeply about learning and about one another, come here. If you want a change of pace, come here. If you strive for the best in yourself, professionally and personally, and want your students to do the same, come here.

Come be a part of Kenyon.

    What's the area like?

Kenyon and the surrounding area are often remarked upon for their beauty. Very near campus is the Brown Family Environmental Center, where nature lovers will often attend free programs and events for kids and adults alike that include night hikes, bird-watching, or native plant and animal exploration. Through it runs the Kokosing Gap Trail, on which casual walkers and sports enthusiasts alike will hike, run, or bike the 14 miles (and growing!) of former rail line. The Rural Life Center explores and promotes the lifestyles present and past in Knox County , in which Kenyon is located. Knox County exemplifies Midwestern openness, and also an increasing diversity typical of the rest of the country.

Mt. Vernon, located 4 miles from Kenyon College, is the seat of Knox County. Mt. Vernon boasts both a public square surrounded by historic buildings, an active theater community, and a commercial district which includes a movie theater, retail stores, and restaurants.

Finally, there is Columbus, a vibrant city with diverse shopping, dining, and cultural opportunities. Its many neighborhoods, including notably the Short North, host a tremendous array of independently owned restaurants, varying from those with a heavy farm-to-fork emphasis to numerous international cuisines brought to the city by its multinational population, and much more. Columbus's cultural scene includes an outstanding symphony orchestraballet company, and several theater groups. Its historic theater buildings host the Broadway in Columbus seriesthroughout the year. Located throughout the city are also several major shopping areas, including Polaris and Easton. Columbus is, finally, home to three professional sports teams, and to the Ohio State Buckeyes, whose football and basketball teams especially enjoy loyal and very spirited fans at their games.  Located less than an hour away from Kenyon, Columbus is an attractive destination.

    What if I have a spouse/partner?

Dual job searches are often a challenge. If there is no suitable position available at Kenyon for a spouse or partner, there are opportunities close by. Knox County is home to Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and several large employers who often have openings for healthcare workers, engineers, and other professionals: the Knox County Community Hospital Kokosing Construction Company, and Ariel Corporation, to name a few. Many of these attract professionals from all over the country. Within an hour, there are also opportunities in neighboring cities and counties. Columbus is home to Nationwide Insurance, JPMorgan Chase & Company, and Abbott Nutrition, among other large employers. As the capital of Ohio, Columbus is also home to many state government positions

For academic spouses and partners, the Five Colleges of Ohio ("Ohio 5") often have postings at those institutions. The Columbus metro area is also home to The Ohio State University's flagship and regional campuses, as well as more than 40 other colleges and universities.
