Classification Title Maintenance Laborer - Associate Position Type Staff Department Building Maintenance Position Title Maintenance Laborer Position Number 7377 Pay Grade Range Nature of Work

Reporting to the Construction Superintendent, this is an entry level position for skilled trades workers.

This position may or may not be assigned to a specific trade and will have the opportunity to work in the Building Trades Shop (Carpentry & Paint), the Electrical Shop, Plumbing Shop, and the HVAC/R Shop as needed for the development of trades skills.

A Maintenance Laborer performs maintenance and cleaning work in a campus setting using the appropriate cleaning equipment, hand tools, power tools and related materials to complete generalist, non-specialized, small scale short duration tasks.

The person in this position must assist other maintenance and custodial workers in completing work orders as assigned and is responsible for the upkeep of tools and equipment. This person must clearly communicate information regarding the status of work orders and must take appropriate action to comply with building and safety regulations.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of High school diploma or GED is required, basic working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems, and the capability to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.

A valid driver’s license required.
Pre-employment drug screen required.

Must be skilled in performing technical tasks with an eye for detail, skilled in adapting to meet changing job conditions, preparing and maintaining accurate records; understand and comply with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials in the performance of job duties (i.e. OSHA and EPA).

Must be able to follow instructions, perform routine tasks individually or in a team setting; well organized; able to perform work in the least disruptive manner possible to customers; able to demonstrate courteous actions; and able to follow the organization’s established protocol for customer service.

Must be able to communicate effectively in a clear and effective manner; listen to others and understand their needs; ensure that information is accurate and properly relayed; establish and maintain a productive and collaborative professional work relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Training: Previous Technical training, Technical College, Trades School or Trades apprenticeship training.

Experience: One (1) year or more experience in a maintenance or custodial related position in a university, health care, or school maintenance department or (1) year or more experience in carpentry, electrical, HVAC/R, or plumbing trade.

Skills: Should be familiar with basic operation of computers and handheld devices, including web browsing, email, and filling out online forms.

Knowledge: Should be able to read and interpret technical information, including charts, gauges, dials, blueprints, schematics, specifications, and operating manuals.

Salary $14.48/hourly (minimum) to $17.85/hourly (midpoint) Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more. Ability to climb ladders/stairs and scaffolds. Must be able to frequently move around campus, access confined spaces and work in open areas such as roof tops, etc. Ability to reach above shoulder level; ability to perform strenuous manual tasks.
