General Statement of Job

The Coordinator of Veteran Recruitment and Engagement assists the Director of Student Financial Services and veterans affairs certifying officials in the overall administration of veteran educational benefits, institutional aid, third party programs, State Aid, and VA work-study. The coordinator is primarily responsible for the administration of the GI Bill, the Hazlewood Exemption Program and the quarterly reporting to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Conducts internal and external recruitment efforts. Supervises veterans affairs certifying officials and part-time staff.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assists the director in the overall administration of veteran educational benefits.
  2. Monitors the activity of veteran educational benefits for all campuses.
  3. Responsible for the administration of the Hazlewood Exemption Program and submission of the quarterly reports due to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  4. Oversees all the federal VA educational benefits, Chapter 33, Chapter 30, Chapter 31, Chapter 35, and Chapter 1606.
  5. Conducts internal mock audits for students under Chapter 33 to prepare for annual audits and provides reports to director.
  6. Submits enrollment reports to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  7. Oversees the awarding of the Veteran Tuition Assistance.
  8. Participates in the committees to request grant money to support veteran students.
  9. Conducts internal and external recruitment efforts.
  10. Works collaboratively with the Public Relations/Marketing department for recruitment strategies.
  11. Responsible for organizing veteran events, such as Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and 911 remembrance.
  12. Maintains communication with outside agencies for veterans support such as: VIDA, Tropical Texas, Texas Veterans Commission, VA Clinic Representatives, and the Rio Grande Valley Veterans Coalition.
  13. Maintains familiarity with the school’s registration cycle, student’s accounts, reporting of fees, attendance, awarding process.
  14. Maintains records in a safe place and ensures privacy of veteran students is protected.
  15. Keeps current with all federal and state regulations and requirements of veteran educational programs.
  16. Ensures that veteran students are fully aware of their responsibilities to the school.
  17. Handles all information in a confidential and sensitive manner.
  18. Maintains familiarity with the College’s policies, procedures and academic standards.
  19. Recommends for hire, supervises trains, assigns schedules, and evaluates veterans affairs certifying officials and part-time staff.
  20. Serves as Campus Security Authority.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.

  1. Bachelor’s Degree required.
  2. At least two (2) years of experience working with veterans required.
  3. Experience in a higher education institution, preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  2. Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
  3. Knowledge of veteran educational benefits.
  4. Knowledge of local, state and Title IV financial aid programs.
  5. Understanding and working knowledge of regulations and requirements of financial aid programs.
  6. Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  7. Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  8. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  9. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse, multi-cultural student population.
  10. Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  11. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  12. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  13. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  14. Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  15. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  1. All applicants are subject to a national criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

Physical Requirements
  1. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  2. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  3. Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  4. Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  5. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  6. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  7. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  8. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  9. Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  10. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  11. Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  12. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  13. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  14. Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
