The Director of Advancement Strategic Initiatives provides essential support to the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, Marketing and Initiatives and provides a full range of services to meet major goals of the Office of University Advancement. Priority is given to high-level, strategic projects in support of University Advancement goals and priorities.
The director reports to the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, Marketing and Initiatives in University Advancement and coordinates closely with colleagues within advancement and across the university as required to ensure the smooth execution of high-priority projects.
The director coordinates and leads strategic initiatives identified by leadership, particularly in areas that connect funding priorities, principal prospect/donor management, engagement initiatives and strategic communications and events with broader university goals. The director also supports key advancement initiatives and is responsible for project execution and project deliverables.
The director manages writing projects for campaign donor proposals especially proposals at the $1M+ level, with special attention to complex proposals with multiple stakeholders.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing fundraising initiatives and strategic plans, developing priorities that align with the university’s strategic plan, philanthropic interests of major prospects or special university-wide projects.
  • Collaborating with leadership, faculty and advancement staff to develop concepts, conduct in-depth research and write strategic communications that support those initiatives.
  • Working with development officers and advancement staff across the university to devise strategic plans for engagement initiatives and events on campus, across the U.S. and in key global regions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with significant professional experience and specialized expertise.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles particularly in a higher-education setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in campaign strategy or, planning, and execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, collect data and provide analysis on various topics.
  • Service-oriented approach, personal initiative and creative thinking.
  • Demonstrates excellent project coordination, planning and leadership skills with the ability to lead strategic initiatives across the university.
  • Demonstrates strong innovative and analytical thinking with the demonstrated ability to prepare, implement and lead improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with team members and diverse group of colleagues from across the institution.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a high attention to detail and demonstrated ability to write strategic communications and fundraising proposals.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and competing projects and relationships concurrently.
  • Ability to create and format reports and presentations.
  • Ability to identify short- and long-range goals of multiple departments and contribute to effective and measurable execution of outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Significant professional experience in higher education, particularly in a position within university advancement that required coordination with campus leaders.
  • Experience working with not-for-profit institutions.
  • Previous experience working in a strategic role driving organization-wide initiatives.
  • Experience working in highly-matrixed organizations with multitudinal goals and numerous stakeholder profiles.
  • Professional certification is a plus.
  • Knowledge of William & Mary, the institution’s strengths and the university’s priorities to make connections with the strategic planning process.
  • Understanding of graphic design principles and concepts.
  • Ability to visually conceptualize layouts.
  • General understanding of HTML, Web design and social media.
  • Familiarity with Adobe InCopy, InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with project management methodologies.
