Director of Athletics

The Director of Athletics is responsible for administering and directing the College’s intercollegiate athletic and recreation programs consistent with the College’s Strategic Plan. In addition, the Director is responsible for selecting/supervising personnel, preparing the athletic budget, utilizing the Athletic Advisory Board on intercollegiate athletic issues and developing and implementing policies and procedures consistent with NJCAA regulations. The Director will work collaboratively with the Physical Education Department to coordinate use of facilities and fields.

1. Qualifications:

A. Educational Background: Master’s degree in Physical Education, Sports and Recreation, Sports Management, Higher Education Administration or a related field required.

B. Experience: Minimum of three years’ experience with increasing levels of responsibility in the administration intercollegiate athletics and/or intramural programs required. Knowledge of and experience in college-level teaching, preferably at a community college, and physical education, intercollegiate athletics (e.g., coaching), and/or intramural administration preferred

C. Special Skills:

  1. Experience with computerized student information systems, preferably Datatel, required.
  2. Computer skills required include Microsoft Office Suite.
  3. Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills required to effectively manage and motivate staff and students.
  4. Strong organizational skills required with the ability to prioritize multiple demands and tasks.
  5. Ability to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other College stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrated performance in developing and managing a high performance team.
  7. Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate evening and weekend demands.
  8. Knowledge of federal and state Title IX regulations and NJCAA standards and requirements

2. Essential Functions:

  1. Supervise and coordinate all phases of the College’s intercollegiate athletic programs (i.e., scheduling, transportation, student eligibility, game officials, recognition events, etc.) in accordance with the College, National Junior College Athletic Association, Mid-States Athletic Conference and FLCC Association standards and policies.
  2. Supervise and coordinate the College’s recreation programs, including the Fitness Center and intramurals, in collaboration with the Physical Education Department.
  3. Hire, train and evaluate athletic department full- and part-time staff; ensure staff awareness of and compliance with College policies and procedures, as well as NJCAA rules and regulations.
  4. Provide oversight of all athletic facilities and fields make recommendations to strengthen/improve facilities.
  5. Prepare and maintain the athletic budget in collaboration with the Executive Director of the FLCC Association and Vice President of Enrollment Management.
  6. Develop, communicate and maintain written policies and procedures for athletic and recreation/intramural programs.
  7. Develop and implement an annual athletics recruitment plan in collaboration with the Director of Admissions, Admissions Counselor – Athletic Recruitment, and coaching staff.
  8. Develop and implement retention strategies targeting student athletes in collaboration with the Divisions of Academic and Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
  9. Ensure all students participating in intercollegiate athletics have completed Title IX training; maintain records pertaining to students’ completion of training requirements.
  10. Coordinate meetings of and agendas for the Athletic Advisory Board; attend Athletic Advisory Board meetings.
  11. Coordinate summer athletic camps in collaboration with the Executive Director of the FLCC Association and appropriate College staff.
  12. Develop and implement the sports information communication plan in collaboration with the part-time Sports Information Director.
  13. Review and approve contractual agreements for athletic events, camps, rental/use of athletic facilities, etc.
  14. Represent athletics on college-wide committees and task forces.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Enrollment Management.

The starting salary is $76,858 and commensurate with experience.

Organization

Finger Lakes Community College was established in 1965 and opened for instruction in 1967. Set on a 250-acre, park-like campus, the College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It is a public, open access institution dedicated to providing a quality education in a student-centered environment.

Located in the Finger Lakes region near Canandaigua, NY, the College lies in an area known for its beautiful natural surroundings, exquisite fall foliage, Canandaigua Lake, and local wineries. In addition to the main campus, the College provides instruction at its campus centers in Geneva and Newark and at its Muller Conservation Field Station on Honeoye Lake.

Instructional facilities include science and computer laboratories, technology-enhanced classrooms, music-recording and editing studios, a multi-media communications lab, a 900 square-foot television studio and control room, the community’s public access television station, a simulated nursing hospital station, a therapeutic massage lab, drafting rooms, a greenhouse and arboretum, fine arts studios, a music rehearsal hall, a gymnasium, and a spacious library.

Founded: Established in 1965, opened in 1967.

Enrollment: 6,699 full- and part-time students (Fall 2009). The average age of full-time students is approximately 22; part-time, approximately 24. Students from more than 350 different high schools in New York State and across the United States enrolled at FLCC in Fall 2009, along with students from a few other countries.

Graduates: More than fifty-five percent of FLCC students graduate with A.S. or A.A. transfer degrees prepared for further study at four-year institutions. Others graduate with A.A.S. degrees or certificates prepared to obtain employment in their field of study.

Special Opportunities: FLCC offers more than forty academic degree and certificate programs, honors studies, a January Plan and Minimesters, online and hybrid, travel and expedition courses, internships, high school dual-credit programs, non-credit and workforce training offerings, and Adult Basic Education/GED programs. The College also holds Joint Admissions Agreements and Transfer Agreements with public and private four-year colleges and universities that allow graduates to transfer their credits in pursuit of bachelor's degrees, receiving full junior status.

Campus & Facilities: FLCC’s campus of more than 250 acres is located adjacent to the scenic and recreationally-rich Canandaigua community, 45 minutes from Rochester, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. The multi-level campus includes science and computer laboratories, technology-enhanced classrooms, music-recording and editing studios, a multi-media communications lab, a 900 square-foot television studio and control room, the community’s public access television station, a simulated nursing hospital station, a therapeutic massage lab, drafting rooms, a greenhouse and arboretum, fine arts studios, a music rehearsal hall, a gymnasium, and a library complex, among others. Nature trails, outdoor classrooms, athletic fields, a modern Child Care Center, and the nationally-known Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center are located on the campus grounds. The College has Campus Centers in Geneva and Newark. The Muller Field Station, located at the southern end of Honeoye Lake, provides additional outdoor experiences.

Student Life: Activities for student involvement and networking include the Student Corporation, Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma honor societies, National Society of Leadership and Success, student publications, theatre productions, art exhibits, musical organizations, lectures, concerts, and special interest clubs.

Intercollegiate Athletics: Finger Lakes sponsors men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, and track teams, as well as women's basketball, cross-country, softball, soccer, track and volleyball. Men and women participate in a nationally recognized Woodsmen team.
