Job Description:

SUMMARY

Supervises operations of unit by setting priorities and enforcing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises operations of unit by setting priorities and enforcing regulations, internal policies and proceduresDevelops materials and maintains lab equipment for instruction, demonstration and general laboratory useAssures all laboratory equipment and instrumentations are functioning properly and coordinates maintenance or repair as neededSelects, hires, trains, coaches, develops, and manages the performance of assigned staffPlans, organizes and implements procedures required to effectively operate the laboratory and maintain a high level of customer satisfactionMonitors unit workload to ensure equity and appropriate use of financial resourcesPrepares departmental budgets and assists with the annual budget planning processManages operational needs and monitors and controls expenses within the budgetCollaborates with College-wide committee(s) of peers to update and review lab safety guidelines and rulesReviews weekly inventory of supplies and orders as necessaryResearches and evaluates new equipment for purchase decisionsAssures that all personnel are following safety protocol in compliance with local/state/federal regulatory requirements, particularly while experiments are in progress Maintains accurate, and up to date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in appropriate data bases as specified by the Compliance and Risk Management departmentCollaboratively assists faculty regarding laboratory preparationsCollaborates with faculty to coordinate and optimize laboratory facilitiesAssists with the planning and execution of the chemistry laboratories transition to the new STEM CenterPerforms other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/TRAINING

Bachelor's degree in a Science-related field

Significant related experience may substitute for education

Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in a science laboratory setting

Demonstrated experience supervising, planning, assigning, scheduling and ensuring the quality of the work of others

Demonstrated experience monitoring a business area’s budget

Demonstrated experience making sound decisions that affect a work unit or team

Demonstrated experience in a role requiring diverse problem solving methods in a variety of situations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

Possess working knowledge of Chemistry concepts, practices, and procedures with the ability to use in varied situations as it pertains to the departmental focus

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to effectively completely work assignments independently

Possess excellent organizational and prioritization skills with demonstrated attention to detail

Ability to be creative and exercise initiative

Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Possess strong organizational and time-management skills

Ability to adjust to changing priorities and respond appropriately to deadlines

Master’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or related field Demonstrated supervisory experience in a laboratory setting Demonstrated laboratory experience in an academic environment
