Conrad J. Bergendoff Visiting Fellow in Religion

Job description

Conrad J. Bergendoff Visiting Fellow in Religion

Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., invites applications for a Conrad J. Bergendoff Visiting Fellow in the Religion Department for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus. Rock Island is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.

We seek a creative and reflective teacher enthusiastic about serving general education students enrolled in courses that fulfill the college’s “Reasoned Examination of Faith” (REF) requirement.

All religion faculty staff these courses, each of which critically analyzes questions and topics related to the Christian tradition (often in relation to other religious, ethical, or historical traditions/topics), seeks to raise student interest in these questions and topics, and enables students to connect what they learn to broader areas of their educations, vocations, and personal lives.

We welcome historical, theological, ethical, ethnographic, comparative, or other scholarly approaches to any of the following REF sections: Christian Origins; Jewish and Christian Scriptures; Christian Ethics; Christian Theology and Contemporary Issues; American Christianities; Radical Lutherans/Lutheran Radicals; Jesus and Discipleship, Then and Now; Literature and Theology; Global Christianities; Sages, Mystics, and Philosophers; Religion and Film; and The Disciplined Life: Asceticism in Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism.

We welcome the development of new REF course names/topics as well, to be taught after one or two terms of staffing one or more of the above sections.

Being a diverse and inclusive community is central to the college’s mission and reflected in the strategic plan. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for a diverse student body. Candidates from underrepresented groups or who otherwise diversify the Religion department are especially encouraged to apply. Terminal degree/PhD is desired; ABD will be considered.

Teaching expectations: six classes spread over three terms (twosemesters, plus an immersive “J-Term” in January), at least five of which will be courses satisfying the REF general education requirement. The hired Bergendoff Fellow can decide whether to teach the same REF course 5-6 times or to teach two or more different courses.

The Bergendoff Fellow will be expected to participate in programs designed to help new faculty develop their pedagogical skills. The fellow also will be expected to make at least one on-campus presentation of scholarly work or pedagogical innovation.

Term of appointment: one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year, contingent on staffing needs, demonstrated excellence in the classroom, and funding. Health insurance, professional meeting allowance and other benefits provided.

Augustana College is an equal opportunity employer and actively encourages applications from women and persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds. We do not discriminate based on age, race, color, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability or creed, and strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply for this position.

Details about Augustana College, our expectations of the faculty, the selection process, and the Quad Cities are available at Teaching at Augustana. Questions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Jason Mahn. Review of applications will begin on March 11, 2019.

A complete application includes: a letter of application focused on teaching experience and interest, curriculum vitae, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation (including contact information).
