Scope of Job:
Under the moderate supervision and with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs routine research projects. May supervise the work of others.

Description of Duties:
• Performs cellular and molecular biology laboratory procedures including cell culture, optical microscopy, histology, flow-cytometry, extraction, purification and analysis of DNA, RNA and Proteins.

• Conducts inventories and maintains cell repository samples.

• Assists in sample preparation and optimization of cellular and molecular assays.

• Collects, compiles, and analyzes research data.

• Prepares, collects, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records for experiments.

• Uses statistical methods and relational databases to analyze data sets.

• Prepares or assists with preparing reports of research findings.

• Assists with planning, developing, coordinating, and administering research projects.

• May assist in designing and creating computer programs for research applications.

• Operates and maintains equipment and automated systems.

•May train users on the operation and data management of research equipment.

• Maintains inventory of research related material.

• Complies with all State and University policies.

• Other duties may be assigned.

Specific supervision from assigned supervisor.

May carry out limited responsibilities in accordance with the project objectives, policies and applicable laws guidance for student employees.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited University in an applicable discipline.

Equipment:
Knowledge/experience to preform cell and molecular biology techniques, particularly optical microscopy, histology and flow-cytometry. Familiarity with basic cell culture and molecular methods, including maintenance of cells in culture, cell storage, cell counting, fluorescence imaging, extraction and analysis of DNA, RNA and proteins.
Knowledge of statistical concepts and methods and their application to research analysis, of measurement, testing, and evaluation, and of research methods, principles, techniques, and philosophies. Skilled in conducting qualitative and quantitative research and in using computers, software, and statistical tools and programs. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee research projects, evaluate research data, ensure the development of measuring instruments with respect to reliability, relevance, and validity, interpret and publish research findings, and communicate effectively. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
